Ok, retiring in Dec. and planning to visit Guatemala last week March and all of April 2017 to see if living there is an option. Here's my basic question. I fly in from the states to GUA. I would like to spend one week in Antigua, and four on the lake. Right now thinking two in Pana and two in Santa Cruz la Laguna . Would anyone have a suggestion in what order would be the easiest to catch my flight out of GUA when time comes? Right now I'm thinking go from GUA to Pana, then to Santa Cruz saving Antigua for last. Thoughts? Thanks in advance...I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

March is high season.. and close to Easter week make sure to have reserved ahead of time.. First Panajachel and Sta Cruz as it easier to catch a flight from Antigua.. many shuttles all the times... Same for Panajachel and Sta Cruz look ahead for rentals.. I live in Sta Cruz La Laguna PM if you need more info

Flying around Guatemala is expensive and not necessary. From Guatemala City to Antigua is about an hour depending on traffic. And from Antigua to Pana is about a 3 hour drive. You can easily and inexpensively take a boat from Pana to any of the villages around the lake. We were fortunate to find an excellent driver to pick us up at the airport and take us anywhere we wanted to go. His name is Ruben Mata and his e-mail address is rubentravels@gmail.com and more information at http://rubentravels.blogspot.com. Ruben speaks English which we found helpful when we first arrived in Guatemala. His vehicles are comfortable and he is an excellent driver, very knowledgeable and reliable. Over the time we have been here we have used Ruben many times and have now become friends with him and his family. He is a very kind and helpful person and someone who has gone way above and beyond several times to help us out as we got settled here. I hope you enjoy your stay in Guatemala. We retired here from the U.S. and have been very happy with our life here.

Please note that 3 hours Pana to the airport assumes no traffic problems.. If you are taking a public or private shuttle, and intend to take a flight the same day, allow at least 6 hours. Leaving at 3 am for a 9 am flight, we hit traffic due to an accident and missed the flight.

Thanks for the info. I plan to go directly from GUA at 12:15 pm to the lake where I will spend 5 weeks . My last week I will return to Antigua which I understand is around an hour away. My flight is an afternoon flight so no worries with getting to the airport first thing in the am. Thanks again though!

Antigua is about 2.5 hours from the Lake and 1.0 hour from Guatemala. (Heavy traffic can stretch that out a bit.)
