Insulin choices in Guatemala

I'm diabetic and have lived here for 3 1/2 years. The fast acting insulin I have been using, Humalog, is very effective but about Q500 for a 10ml vial. On a recent visit to Solola, Insulex N was recommended as a substitute at about 1/2 the cost. I can not seem to find any comparison info on line. Has anyone had experience with this Insulin?

My husband is insulin dependent and uses Humalog as well. He has not used Insulex N, but he does buy his Humalog from Canada at about $29 CD. We go to Canada twice a year and so buy it at Costco there and then bring down about 6-7 months worth. But you can also order it online. Am not sure if this is an option for you, but thought I would throw it out there.

Unfortunately, the online Canadian sources are astronomical (over $300 for a 10 ml vial!) due to U.S. pharma and gov't. pressure.

U.S. law says that only drug manufacturers can import prescription drugs into the U.S., but U.S. Customs allows personal use. They say 3 months worth, but my husband has never been questioned and we have been doing this for many years.

Thanks for the reply. One of the great things about Guatemala is that you can buy most prescription drugs here without having a prescription. This does, however, put much more responsibility on the individual. Using 7.5 Q to the dollar, I can buy Humalog for $66.67 here in Pana. Compared to $300 online Canada, it is probably better for me to stay the course. I need to decide if I want to experiment on myself and decide if saving $67.00 a month is worth it. I certainly know how diabetes is affecting myself and believe I could assess the effectiveness of Insulex N on myself. Couldn't do this in the U.S.
