I am looking to drive to Guatemala in the near future. I am currently in Guadalajara, Mexico. Has anyone made the drive there lately? Need advice re: routes, places to stay along the way, safety, etc. Thanks

I suggest you get yourself a road map at any of the news stands on the street for a few pesos. The one I have from www.mapasindependencia.com comes with a distance table. Then you can go online and in english or spanish google the distance between points along the route (cual es la distancia entre***** y ***). Then set yourself a distance to drive before dark. And check for hotels in that particular town. In my case i like to drive not more than 700 miles and stop for the night before dark. The way I see it on my map, from Guadalajara I would take the four lane route to Toluca/Mexico City. And then to Puebla/Coatzacoalcos/Tuxtla Gutierrez/San Cristobal de las Casas. And from there to the border at La Mesilla. Over the last few months I've been checking on line which roads to stay away from because or frequent fatal accidents. And if I recall correctly I think I read that the road between Puebla and Cordoba is one of the worse because of fog and heavy cargo traffic. But for the most part the route to guatemala is safe provided you drive during day light. I did it many years ago from San Antonio, TX. But nowadays most of the roads in Mexico are four lane modern highways. As far as I know roads in guatemala are fine too. Good luck.
