There is no pharmacy in Guatemala that supplies NDT (natural dessicated thyroid) medicine; Synthroid and its generic equivalent is all that's available here.

I have to get mine shipped from the States.

Thank you for your quick response. I now have a starting point to figure out my dilemma by April 10th arrival. I will visit for 3 months . Do you get it shipped to you by- friend, pharmacy , or manufacturer ?

I get my through a pharmacy called Women's International Pharmacy. They will ship internationally, although I ship it through a cargo company where I pay by the pound.

You are allowed to bring in a 90-day supply of medicine for your personal use as long as the container it is in shows what the medicine is and that it's for you. If I were you, I'd bring that much in, at least to begin with. We have to be careful trying to get someone else to bring in medicine for us, as it theoretically could be considered some sort of trafficking; all medicine should be in the name of the person bringing it in.

If you are here longer and your supply runs out, you'll have to get a written prescription from a doctor here, along with a copy of his/her license, and either fax it to the pharmacy in the states or mail it in (they are prohibited by US law from accepting photos or emails of prescriptions). It's a pain to do this, but that's how it goes. With WIP, they'll allow you to purchase the entire year's worth at one time (which saves money) or even half-year at a time and their prices are pretty reasonable. You can send me a PM if you'd like and I can tell you more.

Best thing anyone could do is PLAN AHEAD. Bring what you will be needing plus extra. If you are coming for a visit that should be no problem. If for an extended period, plan ahead or if someone from here is heading north, have them pick up your meds on their return. Medicine here is expensive.

Some medicine here is expensive, but some is much cheaper and some generic versions are as much as 1/6 the cost in the U.S. For example Seretide Diskus 50-250 equivalent to Advair is $66.66 compared to the current $350.00 a friend of mine is paying in Wisconsin. Like everything else pertaining to Guatemala blanket statements like "medicine is expensive in Guatemala" may be completely true or false or somewhere in the middle. Depends on who you are, where in the country you are, and how persistent yet respectful you are. This is a wonderful place full of surprises. Good advice to bring your personal meds, but you may also find a source here. Enjoy your trip!
