Onsidering a Move to Honduras

I believe that the US will implode in the near future. Considering a move abroad. Property in Honduras seems affordable.

If we do it we would probably look at property in the rain forest.

How hard is it to obtain building materials?

Can you build your own buildings or do you have to hire a local builder?

How bad are customs fees to import hard goods (considering a portable sawmill and solar array).

Is it safe to live out in the jungle?

I enjoy shooting sports. Will I be able to bring my guns with me? I do not have any full auto but do have simi auto pistols and rifles. I understand that it may take some time to jump through the hoops. Just wondering if it is even possible.

After a home is built how much should it take per month to live there?

First ,let me introduce myself, I am a gringo living in Honduras, on the Northern Coast,the Caribbean Coast as opposed to the Pacific coast. . near La Ceiba . We live at the base of the Bosques of Monte Real. La meaning the forest at the mountains. anyway. this is as close to the jungle as we would like to be. and still have civilization the way we prefer. We have private schools for the children ,close to town. a supermarket ,"hardware stores,a mall , because their are housing projects being built around here.their are building supply places in town. . anyway. to answer any part of your questions. First ,You have to look at income you have ,compared to living expenses etc. ,There are different areas gingos live in. You should make an exploratory trip for at least a month to decide the areas you could live in. Basically you go by where other gringos live,start with major cities and the areas around them. Basicaly their are three major cities. San Pedro Sula ,is the biggest city in Honduras. I have been there numerous times. ,too dangerous and its a "city ,heavy traffic,people ,etc. then you have Tecguicgalpa, the capital ,cool climate in the mountiains .more expensive then other areas. listed as dangerous in the city areas ,then you have La Cieba the third city. on the Northern coast of Honduras,close to the Caribbean sea. You have the Beach,you have the Bosques ,mountains, Rivers, city live ,a Hospital mall,suprermarket, private schools you need cable,internet , cellphone service is good ,the electric grid is new.so you will have electricity 24 hours.etc. not expensive to live here, close to everything you need etc. You have other regions on the Northern coast .Tela ,is not bad ,I was not impressed but it is a Beach town.Olancha.and varous other" campo ",country towns. anyway. next question . custom fees. are put on everything .from importing a pencil to a computer, the latest news is you will pay ,according to the price 20% of ther value, but do to the CAFTA accord,you can get that stuff down here. for building things. rent it or someone will do it for you. labor is the cheapest commodity here. . don;t bring heavy items or send things down here. too expensive. next question.Is it safe to live out in the jungle ,I would say no it is not safe, there are super poisonous snakes ,spiders,bugs,moskitos. dengue fever,etc. and when it rains there could be landslides, there are earthquakes ,super rain storms. which wash away houses and anything in their path, you also need to be near a hospital,for emergenciies. It is not necessary to live in the rainforest they have tours everyday to the rainforest.and overnight accomadations. next question Guns. unless your a legal Honduran resident ,or citizen of the country you can not imprort guns. Anyway. we get stopped almost every day on the higway ,by the Police ,and or military checking your papers and checking you don;t have guns. super dangerous to have them in your car. We were under military or quasi military rule. here, after the overthrow of the President in June.; We were under military curfew ,You must be in the house when the military declares a toque de queda, anyway. try that sport at a ,later time after you been here a while. last question.electricity rates are high. renting a house or apartment is inexpensive compared to US.private schools ,inexpensive .super market prices on food. close to US prices. depending on what you like to eat. You can eat out here ,it is not expensive for fast food restaurants ,etc. water expense to the house is inexpensive. I would say to have at least $2000.00 per month. depending on where you want to live,entertainment ,clothes are inexpensive. also you can buy used building equpment,building supplies, home applicances ,tv,etc. from pulgas ,kind of like flea markets. anyway thats my infoirmation from La Ceiba. good luck ,check the places out first, flights from Miami, New York, Houston, Altanta are very inexpensive. arilines that fly here are Taca,American,Spriit, to San Pedro Sula. Bye PS . The majority of the population are indiginous .mostly poor people. The language is Spanish. you should have a basic working knowledge of the language. It would make your life much easier, for Banking,changing money, emergencies,medical,etc. you can learn something online course. Bye from la Ceiba Honduras.

You have to have a permit from the Govt. to own a chain saw. Not hard to get but you wont find parts that accessible.You may want to look near LAGO deYOJOA (Lake Yahoa) 1 hour from S.P.S. There is atown named Sigatapeckie that is how it is pronounced. Very nice and quiet. My wife is a Honduran Attorney . When you get here find an honest one they are very nescarry in this country luckily they are not that expensive. you you need one for even buying a car to ensure you dont get ripped off

@Tiobob47

Hello -

I hope that you are still around. I am looking to purchase some property in the LaCeiba area under a corporation and work on obtaining my residency.
Does your wife assist with these kinda matters? IF so, i would like to speak with her about my plans.

Thanks

A gringo with a gun anywhere in Honduras will be dead within a month. The only way you could bring the tools would be by car. If you can't make it where you are you wont make it down here.
