Retiring in Utila

We are going to build a home on Utila Island sometime in 2014. Already have our lot. Have been reseaching shipping options on building supplies and maybe a boat. Has anyone shipped out of Miami to Honduras? We are looking at a 40ft container, but have not seem to get a good answer on cost. Also on getting residency and dispensia to save on some cost...again not any really good answers.

sure you need a 40ft and not a 20? the guy at villa velgro? ton shipped 2 bungalows + 1 house full of stuff such as low flow toilets and showers and shinks etc from amsterdam. the 20ft container is still in their yard 10 years later. I am thinking the same about moving seasonally to roatan. I am still looking for a lot/ house. petty theft is our main concern so we may have to a caretaker quarters or gated community. good luck on utila plan

we will be off the grid...and can get there by boat only. Petty theft is always a concern.
The cost of building materials have gone up so much that we had to downsize our house from the orginal plans.
the payoff is still the beautiful water....

I have one house that is off the grid but it is 8000 ft high in new mexico. you need propane for everything a elec only for small tv dvd cd radio and several florescent lights. On Roatan you need to be near the top of the ridge to be comfortable. I have stayed at one cabana that was high enough not to have ele but along the beach is different. need ac because of too many sandflies cant have the windows all opened up. I firue a 600sqft cabana with effeicncy apt 150sgft for quest quarters or caretaker. Yes and the payoff is being there and not the US ratrace anymore!!!
