Planning to retire to Roatan next year. Will visit in March for the first time. Any suggestions of whom to talk to and what city to live in? I would like island living but safe. Am a single woman. Don't want to move from States and just live the same way. Any and all advice appreciated.

Hi coolbeans My husband and I like West Bay. We checked out west end but we wanted a more middle of the road persay. West bay is a little more upscale and still has some of the night life if we want it. You can walk to a lot of places and the beach or they're a short drive. Our friend and realtor is Ed du Monceaux and he's the best. Not pushy at all. He does get to the chase though no playing around. He'll tell you like it is. That doesn't waste your time or his. What I mean is he'll ask you specific questions and work on the answers and that'll tell him what's best for you. Do listen to him and he's really understanding and great! If you want anymore info just post here or you can message me. Look for Brenda Martinez. Btw we haven't moved there yet we are in the works though

Hello, Thank you for your reply and the referral for Ed. When I go In March, I will look him up. Does he have a web site? Or email? When you move, are you planning to ship furniture and household goods? Or is it better to buy new on Roatan? I think the West End sounds to touristy and loud for me. I would like quiet and peaceful but be able to go out and have fun also. Safety is a big concern as I will be alone. So many questions. Just started this journey but definitely planning to move next year. Any info you have would be appreciated. Have you been there yet?

Hello Coolbeans58 My wife and I live here in Roatan we live in Sandy Bay it's a nice community a lot of gringos but yet a mix also of islanders. My suggestion to you is to come on down and rent a place before buying, that way you can experinace the different areas. There are a lot of properties for sale but it depends on your budget. I also suggest you talk to people and get to know the island before you decide who to work with. Keep in mind everyone has a guy lol...... If I can be of any help let me know ??

I also live in Sandy Bay and really like the area- close enough to West End if I want to go for a drink or dinner out, but when I'm home, I don't even notice if it's a cruise ship day. Close to Coxen Hole for groceries etc. Definitely a good idea to rent first, maybe a few months in one area of the island, and a few months somewhere else to get an idea.

Hi, thanks for the advice. Sandy Bay seems to be the type of place I would like to live. I will definitely rent first.. Do you know of a good property mgt company that handles rentals? Also did you ship your furniture, etc or buy new? Any and all advise appreciated. How a great day in paradise.

Hi Coolbeans, My husband and I have been researching moving to Roatan for 5 years. This included renting a condo for a while and living like we would if we lived there. We compared the price of items in the grocery stores, household items, prescription drugs, medical facilities, and real estate prices. We will sell almost everything because most real estate is sold furnished, and the duty you pay on bringing in is high. Contact Steve Haas at www.roatan.net. He is originally from Colorado and a wonderful real estate agent who can help you. You truly need to do more research before "jumping off the cliff." No one knows your situation in detail, so other advise is difficult to offer. Due to some immediate health issues, we won't be moving down for another 1-1/2 years. But we are WELL prepared to make the move and make it successful. Good luck to you!!

Hi RockKitty, Thanks for the advice. Hope your health issues improve. I plan to make my first trip to Roatan in March. Steve is already on my radar. I check out his we site every once in awhile. No plans for a definite move. Not yet. I did read somewhere that the duty o retirees was less but will check out. I plan to visit several times before I move. And to rent before purchasing real estate. My grandson is only 7 and leaving him is so hard. Maybe when he is a little older. I want to volunteer in a clinic as I am a nurse. But I will just relax until I go visit. Met some people in Hawaii who told me that water in Hawaii did not compare to Roatan. Itching to go.

Hey Cool
I have lived on Roatan going 15 years now and can help you make the transition to life here. Just ask me as many questions that come to mind. As I can most likely give you a answer or if not my wife can as she has lived here all her life.
All the best,

Hi, i was wondering if you could answer a few things for me. I'm retired with a pension living in Fl. Want to retire someplace relatively inexpensive. Does this island have Scuba diving? Good Fishing (shore or my own small boat) Good Internet service? Cable TV? How about a hospital on the island? Is there a ferry to the mainland?

kids289,
I don't live there but have visited and can answer these questions. Scuba Diving - Yes. 2nd largest barrier reef in the world. Great diving! Good fishing - Yes. Best to go out on a boat to get the larger catches. Internet service is decent. Improved significantly since I was there last, in 2009. Cable TV - Not to sure on this, but do have satellite. Hospital - Yes, near Coxen Hole. Ferry - Yes, goes to La Ceiba. Goes twice a day and cost about $50 round trip for seniors or $65 round trip for adults.
Hope this helps. Steve

I live on Roatan for about 15 years and about Scuba diving on Roatan. The reef system here is within swimming distance from the shore around the whole island. Where as in Belize and Australia where they also have reef systems there is a long boat ride to get to the reefs. There is also cable companies all over the island for good TV service as is the internet service here now. All the best,

Hi Coolbeans,
I have been researching moving to Roatan for several years, don't like to jump into things (lol). I would recommend attending something similar to the investment discovery tour offered by Remax (http://www.roatan-realestate.com/roatan-investment-tours/). If you are planning to retire you can apply for a special visa for retired expats. Once granted, you can ship personal property and vehicles to the Island duty free. This is one of the things I learned through the tour. There is a lot of information floating around (some accurate, some not). I am attending a four day Discovery Tour in February 2016 to speak with some lawyers and real estate professionals, if there is anything earth shattering I will add to my post. Good luck with your search, see you on the island someday, maybe? :-)

Hi, My wife and have been looking for a condo on Roatan. Some apparently new condos are listed but we can't seem to find much information on them. They are the Colibri and Pelicano condos. Are these complete? I notice they are near Coxen Hole. Can anyone help us with info on these units? All info, good or bad, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I don't know about the ones you were looking at, but a couple of years ago I looked at a condo on roatan between mile marker 23 and 24. It was a small project and construction appeared to be stalled. It was nice and in a good area and had a small private beach. The contact is www.clubnatalebayvillas.com Hope this is of some value to you, Willie Williams

I like the west end, very friendly and several secure places to live. I just bought a house with 24 hr security and a community pool shared by 4 units. I love it, I am doing the 6 month split as I still want to maintain a residence in the states.

I see that this thread is a year old, but I hope I can still ask some questions. My hubby and I have just started the process of researching & I believe we are keeping Roatán at the top of our list. We are snorkel fanatics, I am big on hiking, love kayaking, and other outdoor things. Do t want to be anywhere near crocodiles or alligators. Not a big fan of oppressive humidity.
Couple of random questions: 1. I see apartments for rent in Gibson Bight. Would this be a good base area for scouting things out? Where would I find reliable listings for rentals? (House or apartment)
2. What's the typical mode of transportation on Roatán? Is a car rental a necessity? What about bicycles, scooters, or golf carts? Public transportation or taxis?
Thank you for any info that could steer us in proper directions.

If you are not a resident of Honduras, you must leave the country to a country not having a border with Honduras every 90 days. I usually go to Belez on the ferry from Puerto Cortes for a week in Placencia.
