Retire To Island Or Mainland?

Hi,

I am looking at retiring early, to spend time with my wife after she was injured in an accident. This means a big hit to retirement income, and we will need to hire a maid to assist her with the shopping, cooking, laundry, and cleaning.
We were raised on farms, and enjoy gardening, and fruit and nut trees, raising our own food.
We love fishing, I haven't been scuba diving for 28 years, but I understand Roatan has some of the best.

Cost of living may be easier on our budget if we choose mainland, but violent crime is a concern.

Any insight would be helpful.

Hello Baloo,
Just a few thoughts on your move to Honduras. I have lived here for 25 years with no problems. I would recommend renting an apartment for a moth in any area you are considering. Just to get a feel for the place and the costs. There are a lot of people living in the La Cieba area on the coast (where the ferry leaves from for Roatan and Utilla). I live on the beach in Ciniquita which is very close to Omoa and Puerto Cortes.
Let me know if I can help you in any way. This can be a very nice place to live. Check out what is available for your medical needs. That can be important.

It is hard to tell from Google earth, but I don't see a lot of private docks with boats on the mainland, probably because there are few protected lagoons or coves. Roatan looks like it may be better for fishing and diving and owning your own boat.
Is owning and keeping a boat difficult in Honduras? Better on Roatan?
