Thatched hut living

Hello Expats!

We are looking at several places to move in about 3 years - possibly Roatan! We will be starting to visit each place in 2017 and explore the areas with a realistic viewpoint. We are trying to stay at places that offer super rustic living, not resorts. Can you please let us know of any thatched hut places to lease that are not resort oriented? Thanks!!! Kelly

Phase 1 of La Ceiba Beach Club (mainland Honduras) has a very tropical 28' x 28' thatched roof tiki home w/ loft bedroom. The owner is not willing to rent at this point.

You could check out the Sundancer Cabanas in Sandy Bay. Not exactly thatched roof, but they are rustic cabanas. There's one for sale in the community right now; see Roatan.net for this and other listings. I think someone just bought the community & they're setting it up as a vacation rental spot, but their new website isn't ready yet. They have a "contact us" link. Try Sundancercabanas.com to see it.

There are a number of places you can rent; both wooden houses and concrete. Small and large. You can check out AirBNB, and the other sites. Most people list their houses if they are no using them. It will give you an idea of rustic or fancy. Like the other post, don't think I've seen thatched roof, wood, tile, and metal are more common, as people tend to have cisterns for water.

Note: west end of the island is much busier than the east end, you will probably want to rent either scooters or a car, for max exploration.
