Hi...my husband and I are moving to Hong Kong in September of this year with our infant son. I''m looking for a good (preferably American) Pediatrician. Does anyone have any recommendations?

" You will find any number of American TRAINED doctors over here who specialize pediatrics. However, most of them will be Chinese and a few will be British. Some are from India, but I haven''t heard anyone talk about American doctors. If you are coming to live in Hong Kong, you will have to get used to the fact that most of the medical people here are ethnically Chinese but trained in either the US or the UK. I have a six year old, and she really likes her Chinese doctor. He is interested in more than just the symptoms, he is interested in her whole lifestyle when he treats her medical problems. After living here and having a doctor who actually cares about her, I am NOT looking forward to using either the US or UK medical system again. I would suggest talking to the people in the area you choose to live in about doctors they use. Everyone is different and prefer different things. The hospitals and medical professionals are top rate here. I get better care here than I ever did in the UK or US and I am an insulin dependent diabetic. YOu need not worry about Hong Kong as far as care goes. I don''t know about mainland China, but here medical care is just as good if not better than it is stateside. "

" We use Dr. Eunice Wong for our infant. She is Chinese, but spent many years, including her schooling, in America. "

" I agree with Karron (except that my recent experience of UK hospital services was very favourable). First, you will need someone who is reasonably close to where you live. Hong Kong is not as small as it seems, and the traffic through the tunnels can be difficult. The last thing you want is to be travelling miles in the heat with a sick child. I recommend strongly that you forget ethnicity and nationality and look for competence and caring. As long as your daughter is not currently under care you should have time to ask for recomendations from people in your area, or at yours or your husband''s place of work. I fully understand the fear of the unknown, but like Karron, I have high praise for the medical services here - I have given birth to three children in a local Government hospital, used the accident and emergency services several times (including emergency surgery for one of my accident prone children) and the government mother and child clinics and have received emergency life saving surgery myself here. In the government sector, I would describe the services as ""no frills"" - very good basic care but forget about the pretty curtains and syrupy smiles. Obviously, if you have private medical insurance you will be able to use private clinics where time constraints and finance are less of a concern. I am told that the Matilda hospital runs a very good child health programme which you may like to check out. I live in Shatin so have never used it. I am one of the volunteers for expat exchange, so if you would like to contact me directly, please feel free. Gillian "
