Hi,

My wife, 2 children (one newborn) and I are moving to Hong Kong this August and would like some advice on finding accommodation. I will be working on the West side of Hong kong Island but my wife wants to live near a beach. The serviced apartments on the web seem very nice but expensive - any advice? Also is it possible to travel daily ( stress free) from the south of the island to the north?

Thanks.

Hi,
I myself live in the west side of the island and travel to work in the south every day. Its about a 25min cab ride or an hour on the bus. Depending on were you are working you might find that you can get a bus direct. I would advise you to try and get a hold of the local Hong Kong mag or the South China post /scmp.com .To help you to find accomodation. They sometimes have cheep deals break lease ect..
Hope every thing goes well with your move
Good hunting.

Hi
Why not think about Discovery Bay or Silver Mine.. these are on Lantau Island which is about 30 minutes by ferry straight into Central.

Rents are very cheap.

Discovery Bay (also nicknamed Delivery Bay.. because of the number of children) is pretty good for children and has a nice beach by HK standards. (Heavy American influence, so no so good if you find their overbearing attitudes too much)

good luck on the move to HK!

on a side note, just want to address knowitall's comment on the "overbearing" americans for the record ... though there are indeed some ... but just as many exist in other nationalities. including new zealand, i might add. as such, it's an unfair generalization.
