The reason you may have heard this is that pale blue is considered to be one of the mourning colours (at Chinese funerals, special white clothes are worn over ordinary day wear). I know this because I wore a blue evening dress at my wedding banquet, (oops!) much to the surprise of my new Chinese in-laws. Fortunately, it was a deep Royal blue, so although father-in-law would have preferred red, I got away with it..
Men generally wear dark, tailored suits here for business (the idea of dressing down has not caught on). When I first arrived, it seemed to be black, black or black, but there is now more variety, although conservative is the key.
And here's a thought - when you join in the office Christmas party, don't try to off-load your green party hat to any of the men in the room - if they wear it, it means that they are going to be cuckolded. We have had loads of fun trying to force the married men in our family to don a green hat :)
