Would appreciate hearing from local expats regarding quiet areas to reside on islands away from city & polution, but offering ability to commute to city central with reasonable ease. Also, are there areas to live around HK with reasonable rental costs that would offer reasonable commute into city central.
My wife is interested in having access to the beach.
Will appreciate all feedback.

Dr. Larry,
Your requirements can be met in Discovery Bay. 45 minute ferry ride from Central. Club, beaches, trees, etc. Expat haven, also. Some of my friends have actually purchased flats there.
Cannot imagine anywhere else that would meet your criteria. Not sure what you mean by reasonable but for HKG, Discovery Bay is reasonable.

Sorry, but I can't agree that Discovery Bay is "heaven"! Maybe for some expats but ... it's kind of like the community on the "Trueman Show" - totally unreal. If you'd like to integrate a little more with the Hong Kong community but still be in a natural environment - there are lots of options on Lantau (the other side from Disco Bay), Lamma, and even in the NE part of the N.T. near Sai Kung. The latter takes a little longer to commute (an hour by bus and subway from Central - rather than a 30 min ferry ride) but - you have beaches and hiking trails close by, the prices are good, and Sai Kung is a great, mixed community of expats and locals. We love it! Contact me if you want more info: judyATaccomasiaDOTcom.

Hi Dr Larry,
I moved here three months ago from Australia. I personally love Sai Kung it is a really quiet area (down to earth and laid back) with great beaches close by and a really friendly expat community with good quality english food at some great pubs and reasonably cheap accomodation. The reason we are moving there is because I have found it difficult living in a major chinese populated area, where communication is very limited, polution is high and rent is expensive. My partner and I had no idea where to live and relied on his work to find us accommodation (big mistake) luckily we get to move to Sai Kung in December and are looking forward to living in a great community with lots to offer for expats.
Hope this helps.
Chelle
