Hi, we're moving from USA to HK next month. We have US-based health insurance (blue cross) that pays a portion of "out of network" (i.e. overseas) claims, but I'm wondering if we should get some additional health insurance locally in HK. What are medical costs like in HK? Does it make sense to buy additional insurance locally? I would appreciat any feedback.

there are government clinics all over the place. try that. but you must be resident to use it. very low cost. you may drop blue cross.

Dear All,
Well, there are some inexpensive insurance policies in HK, I have a friend, who can provide competitive insurance products.
The government-owned medical clinic does not work for American citizen, they will ask for HK ID for registration.
Call me at 9838-1464 if you need referral.

Nina et al,
If you are a legal resident you can use the government system.
My wife and I found that Charles Monat Insurance is the best for Health Insurance. He's an American who's been here for many years. Phone 2524-8176. www. monat.com.
They feature Danmark which is a fine company and offers you lots of options. It cannot be purchased in the U.S. but covers us in the U.S.
My wife and I carry a high deductible since, for minor complaints, we use local doctors whose fees are very reasonable. If you use expat M.D.'s the tariff goes up quickly.
I've also found the private hospital emergency rooms to be excellent for most minor problems.
Bottom line, health services in Hong Kong are excellent and proper insurance is easy to find.
If in doubt call the Community Advice Bureau at 2815-5444 for totally unbiased tested referrals. It's an NGO staffed by long-term residents of HK based on a similar system in England. They are Great!
Good luck and welcome,
Ed Hahn

Before I moved to HK, i did a google search and found www.pacificprime.com .
From what they told me, HK medical costs are sky high and it's highly recommended to get health coverage before moving to HK. Even if us expats could participate in the public health care system, i've heard that the waiting times are obscene. Anyways, try checking out pacific prime. They were extremely helpful in getting me insured in HK at a reasonable cost.

i have also worked with Pacific Prime. They were very helpful coming up with a comparison table of different options, since the work with all the big insurers to find the right option for you.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
Cheers,
F.

Simple, call either Pacific Prime or Globalsurance. I dont work for them but they deal with expats and travelers who are in need of a health insureance plan or are looking for information. You can easily look them up on the web. You can ask by email or call them toll free. I hope that can help you, JW
