We are moving from San Francisco to HK with a teenage daughter who will be a Junior in fall 06. Any suggestions on schools and where to live? How difficult is it to get into the International Schools? Any clues on school applications?

My parents moved us to HK when I was about that age. I went to HKIS, which was an amazing school and education. All of the students were extremely welcoming to new students, I loved it. The campus is extremely pretty as well.

Go to their website to look into admissions. It is:

I would suggest you apply at the Hong Kong International School immediately. It follows a U.S. curriculum and is very well respected. There is a waiting list. It is also extremely expensive - upwards from US$25,000 per year. If you are being transferred by your company, insure you have an education allowance. If you are moving on your own, take education costs into account.

The HKIS website is http://www.hkis.edu.hk/index.php.

If you cannot get in to HKIS, I have found them to be helpful in finding alternatives. There are other International Schools including Delia School (Canadian) but I am not familiar with them.

Hi, I am Shahid, Congrulation that you are going to move to Hong Kong. It is a very attractive place and hope that you and your family. It depend on your income, how much you like to make an expense on rent of flat. In Hong Kong, 90% of popoulation are living in flats. I suggest for your girl to get admission in West Island School which is on 250 Victoria Road Hong Kong. I recommend the place to live is Baguio Villa, which is a very very convinent place, opposite to sea, in front there is a cyber port, which have cinemas, shopping centre, Busses and mini bus are available.Very nice place.
Good luck. If you like to contact me you can reach me at shahidhfil@hotmail.com. Presently I am in Pakistan.

Hi,

We might be posted to Hong Kong. We're American. I wonder if you have researched the schools. We also have two teenagers who will enter 10th grade next fall. I am looking into HKIS; wondering if there is a waiting list. My worries: Hong Kong isn't a great place for teenagers (?); cost of living; weather; and what a spouse like me can do. I work as a freelance writer but I imagine HK is fairly restrictive for foreign consultants. Any advice?
