American retiring in Hungary

I am a retired police officer/state investigator of Hungarian descent - looking to retire in Hungary in 2012; have two pensions - so, cost of living shouldn't be an issue; but, what about trying to stay over 90 days at a time? How does one overcome this? Any suggestions, hints on this move? Thanks!

If you speak the language and know how to read and write it, you can apply for Hungarian citizenship without giving up your current citizenship. Otherwise you can stay for a number of months and will have to leave the country to come back again. Or you can apply for residency, I don't know how that works. Citizenship is worth a try, lots of perks for citizens.

Do you qualify as a dual citizen? To retire here and maintain your pension / savings income and puchase or rent-- citizenship is the easiest route.

Hi Hunter,

I am seriously thinking about doing the same thing, although our situations are a bit different. I am an American married to a Hungarian woman from Budapest but we are presently living abroad due to my work.

If you don't mind sharing, I would really like to here your reasoning for retiring in Hungary. As far a Hungarian citizenship option I believe it would be best if you contacted the Hungarian embassy in the USA and asked for their assistance. That way you would be sure everything was done correctly and you would have no issues relocating.

Thanks

My husband and I are planning to retire to Hungary within a couple of years. He is American and does not speak the language, I am Hungarian born, and I have gotten my Hungarian citizenship back. I had applied in Hungary for it. So now I am a dual citizen. My husband loves it in Hungary and we can live on our Social Security and pensions very well. We look forward to retiring there. We are looking at living in Balatonfured.

Greetings KEG from sunny Fl. - you asked why I want to retire in Budapest - I am of Hungarian descent on my Mother's side - grew up with many Hungarians; also, I have been all over the world, Asia and Europe - and of all the places I have been, I love Budapest the best - and feel at home there! You can contact me at fmpd@irishnation.com if you want to chat more......tks for the response! Frank.

Hello, my mother is currently a 71yr old U.S. citizen who is retired. She is living in an Assisted Living Facility in the U.S.due to mental illness (depression/bi-polar/paranoia) which MUST require medicine (she's ok when she's on medicine). She wants to move back to her homeland in Hungary very badly to live the rest of her life. She talks about it everytime I speak w/her. She wants to be disenrolled her from her current U.S. health insurance (not have ANY) before she arrives to Hungary so that "they" won't follow her there along with her medical history. She wants to go to a doctor there with a 'clean slate'. I strongly believe it is a foolish plan but I don't have guardianship over her to stop her. However, she's SO persistent and telling me she wont be happy here andmaking me feel guilty. Her social security benefits are only $1360/month with some savings. The friend she will be living with wants $1000/mo to stay home with her (prob includes food). Who can I speak with to find out the approximate cost per month for obtaining health insurance in Hungary AFTER arriving in Hungary?

Dear Hunter! You have several possibilities. For a consultation (free of charge) please contact Andrea at Helpers Hungary. In a nutshell, you could either apply for the Naturalization of the Hungarian citizenship of your parents / grandparents, or you could apply for a resident permit. No tax would be applied to your income if the income comes from another country than the EU zone. Pls call or write me an email. Regards. Andrea
