Going to the doctors....

I need to see a gynecologists for infertility. So I found a English speaking doctor and emailed him explaining my problem, I saw him for an appointment, he did not examine me and refereed me to another clinic. I emailed the other clinic, told the the problem went to the other clinic had a 3pm appointment and was seen at 4:20pm for the doctor to then not examine and said I needed another appointment!

I asked again the cost of the appointment and it was ignored, he just said it would cost a lot, then I emailed the clinic and asked them, they respond sure see you soon, but wont tell me the cost! I have tried asking in Hungarian too – still no answer.

Is this normal? What am I doing wrong?

Likely if they sensed "foreigner" the price just went up! You need to know that there are two kind of practices in Hungary! Government and Private! The funny thing is that a doctor can see you in the AM as a Government doctor and in the PM as a Private doctor at the same office. I could figure out how that could happen but I seen it. I went to a doctor a month ago because I ran out of the meds I brought with me. He saw me on Government time, wrote a script in 4 minutes and when I asked what I owed he said 4,000 forints without looking up. Pretty good for four minutes considering that is what a day labourer gets for 8 hours of hard work! But there you have it. Truth to be told doctors in Hungary are underpaid. The government is too busy spending money on building soccer stadiums and such and hospitals are falling apart and the bathrooms have no soap and paper towel. A mid level doctor makes less money than a McDonalds, shift leader in Bruhaha, Kansas. That is why Hungarian doctors are leaving in drowse! If this is important to you and I assume it is see someone in a Private Hospital. They are more expensive but it is cleaner and they don't hold their hand out for "thank you or (hala penz) money" as the public sector doctors expect! But first ask around!

So far did you pay anything?

My recomendation is to find another doctor. In any case don't go back to them, sounds like a Doctor Scam to me...it's a new scam and like other scams it was invented in Hungary.

The first doctor 8,000huf+ 2,000HUF Halenpenz for the referal.

The 2nd doctor I have refused to pay, another 8,000huf for an appointment to make an appointment!

At this this rate, I think I will have to start over and find another doctor.

It is kind of a scam. Each Doctor is referring you to another Doctor and make 10000 ft for doing nothing...if they will keep passing you around like that they are going to make a lot of easy money.

I don't understand how you can trust these kind of people with your health. I mean from what you are saying it sounfs like the kind of Doctors that can tell you they found the problem and you just need a minor surgery...just sign here...the next thing you know you wake up with one kidney or somthing like that. Maybe thay attended your university where everyone get's an A as long as they stop nagging the professors?

Well, yes and no! I can see someone needing two or even three specialists as they trying to find out the exact cause of your ailment. Is it possible that some doctors take advantage of the fact that they dealing with a foreigner with some resource and also taking advantage of the language barrier. However there are a lot of very knowledgeable doctors here also. Also unless you straight out see a private specialist you have to see your district doctor who then will refer you. That is of course if you have "local" or state insurance. Incidentally have you tried to look at the Embassy web site for English speaking doctors they may list as a courtesy?
