Citizenship

We moved to Hungary 9 months ago and I had applied for my Hungarian citizenship 7 months ago, My husband applied for Residency permit (2year). He received his permit in November, two (2) months after applying. I received my citizenship notification the beginning of January 2016 and received my official Lakcimkartya 3 weeks ago.

Paperwork seems to be the norm here. We had gone to the immigration office at least a dozen times, being called in for paperwork that was forgotten to be done, signatures required, Visa extension 18,000 forint pp. Translation of all paperwork ($ Pricey$)- Our Marriage Certificate, my Birth Certificate and of course all documents proving that my parents were born in Hungary (They left in '56) - I was lucky enough to have their marriage and birth certificates as well as grandmothers passport.
What held up my paperwork was that my Canadian birth certificate (long form) had a typo on it ~ they made me younger by 10 years! Hey I was happy about that, but had to send it back for a corrected copy(rats!)

All in all it was less painfull then expected, at least for us.

I was told that I would be required to take an oath but was never called to do so.

Looking forward to discovering this beautiful country!

Enjoy the' bureaucracy, vehicle inspections, 27 %AFA/VAT, your tax (ado) card (kartya), video/photo traffic fines and the other nonsense. CONGRATS on your citizenship! Now there is 10 million plus 1....! LOL!

Nonsense???? Really??? I have had no issues in the 9 months that we have been here. In fact we pay less taxes here then we do in Canada and the cost of living is WAY cheaper.

Dont listen to Paddington hes everywhere but does not seem to be a huge fan of Hungary, I mean as a citizen I'm not happy for 27% tax however I am not going to cry about it because doing that isn't going to change anything. Congratulation on your citizenship glad to hear it went well. We like paperwork here:). Also may I add that the 'bureaucracy' part is present where ever you want to import your foreign car to any EU country even if a Hungarian is doing it. All the best to you and your new journey in Hungary.

Hi Doris. It is cheaper to live here, period. We've lived in Gyor now for 6 years and enjoy that aspect very much. Also (believe it or not) the "small government" paperwork has become easier. In Gyor there is "one stop shopping" for local gov't stuff. Let me know how you like Tatabanya, I've been to Tata and that is very pretty, drive through Tatabanya on M-1 all the time and it looks kinda industrial. Anyway, there are a lot of nice places to see around where you live. Good luck!
