I am considering Hungary as a retirement spot from the USA. Do I need to start with the local Hungarian consulate or is everything handled from Hungary? After reviewing the somewhat vague information available, I understand that one must get a 1 month visa and go to Hungary to actually apply for the residency permit. Is this correct? Is the initial permit for one or two years? Is it also correct that after 3 years you may apply for a permanent residency? Thanks!

Your "visa free" status gives you 3 months in the EU and/or Hungary. You can apply here and the turn around time is/was about a month. Cost 18,000 HUF,,photo, proof of income and health insurance and a local address (as owner or rental contract or letter from a relative/friend). This of course for a 1 year stay!

I don't think they are too fussy about it. Just show them a paper with any insurence....they don't look if is only for a docs or hospitals... Have a look on Internet....often u can have the travel insurance which includes doctors, hospitals ...and everything else and is much cheaper then other one. I was using some but don't remember now how it's calls. Try to find for u so u can check up the prices.

You should ask questions from a professional immigration lawyer or other expert in this field.
