UK person moving to Hungary after Article 50 is triggered

Presumably the UK is a full member of the EU until the exit date, regardless of the date of the triggering of Article 50?

Thus someone from the UK who moves to Hungary before the actual date when the UK leaves the EU (at least two years after the triggering of Article 50) would have the right to take up full Hungarian permanent residency?

That would seem to be the logical state of things. Is that the case?

If a UK citizen buys a house in Hungary and lives in it in the time between the triggering of Article 50 and the date of the UK leaving the EU and that person is not allowed permanent residency, for how long each year can that person stay in Hungary?

You will need to look this up with the Hungarian Embassy website as laws change....also, it is important to have a visa if you are not a citizen if you plan on staying longer than a tourist (not sure of how many months) - or, if you plan on working in Hungary...They are very strict; so best to be legit!

It cuts both ways and will depend entirely how the EU treats EU citizens and in your case, Hungarians, living in the UK. If the UK doesn't grant citizenship or permanent resident status to Hungarians then it definitely won't happen here in the reverse. However, nothing stops you from proceeding with getting a resident visa based on a home purchase which is what the rest of us third worlders (I am from the US) have to do. Basically, you must provide proof of medical insurance, a return flight ticket receipt, proof of income, etc. More or less proving you will not be a burden on the Hungarian government. You also must get permission to buy a house which took us 6 months to get after our Visa was issued.

My advice would have been to do it before the Brexit happens but I think it is now too late as it will happen by the end of March. So, watch and see how the UK treats the EU citizens living in the UK and you can see where it is heading. Last, Hungary is extremely slow to adopt EU rules, if they adopt them at all. Often they just prefer to pay the fines instead of following the mandates from Brussels. So, your only guidance will be from the UK side and Hungary might take a year or more to determine how to treat UK citizens living in Hungary. Generally, they give back to Hungary more than they take in for services so are a net gain to the economy. This will be the real deciding factor.

Not really sure but just in the past few days I heard talk that EU will start kicking out Hungarian workers from the UK. Will this have any ramifications the other way around? Who knows!

The initial visa free period is 90 days (3 months). Residency or rather permit to stay can vary from 1 year to 5 years depending on a number of things. Hungary still has the option of "buying" residency for 300,000 or so euro for a 5 year investment period which you get back without any interest I think. But this is really designed for people from third world countries (Syrians, Afghans, Nigerians etc.) not our Brit friends, LOL!

Once you get here you can apply; a few short pages of application (in person) stamp for 18,000 forints, one or two passport photos, proof of health insurance and income (pension, bank account, etc). You will get an answer in about a month or less (unless the migrants changed that). This of course for a one year "permit to stay"!
