Advice on Living/Moving to Iceland

I will be retiring in about 1.5 years. My husband would like to retire in Iceland because his Father was Icelandic and came to the US as a child. We have visited cousins of his in Iceland and my husband was enamored with the country. I am worried about the cost of moving to Iceland and whether or not we can afford it. It seems the price of houses is higher than in the US and since the Krona is worth more than the US dollar, my retirement (pension) would be worth less. Can you receive direct deposits in Iceland for social security, for example. If so, do you have to pay Icelandic taxes on it? I would really appreciate someone being honest and telling me if it is possible to live a quality life in Iceland without being financially rich.

Thanks
