Buying furniture etc in South India...

We've just moved from Australia to a small city in Andhra Pradesh called Vijayawada .
We need to buy some large furniture items like beds, mattresses, stove.
Our nearest large cities are Hyderabad and Chennai so we will be going to either of these places for our shopping.
Can anyone recommend great shops in either of these cities?

Thanks
Jenni

Hi Jennifer. I am an American who has resided in India for 7 years. In Chennai I would recommend Vasanth & Co for stoves, refrigerators, etc. Always offer less than the asking price. They are not as bad as some shopes, but we have been able to get a 25% reduction on their "set" prices. There are a number of mattress shops in the city, but most are not great. Springwell makes the best mattresses that are similar to internaional standard, but their lead time is a bit long. I think they told us two weeks, but of course you need to double that. For furniture we go to Kipling & Co for refurbished antiques and colonial style wood furniture. Good luck.

Jenni,

I don't know when you posted about buying furniture, but I wanted to respond anyway. I have visited Vijayawada a couple of times, one time staying for 2 months. Which part of the city are you in? There is a big boulevard by name of Anna something right down Vijayawada where you can buy linens galore, and small items for your house like pots and pans. But as for furniture, not alot of choices in quality. I assume you would have to buy from either Bangalore or Chennai.

Hi:
You may already have left India by now, or never got to Hyderabad, but just in case, can you recommend any places for ready-mde furniture (and antiques) in Hyderabad? Thank you. Sondra (ssitsi@optonline.net)
