I am hoping to move to Kerala, and hope to find some occupation.

As I expect opportunities to be very limited I will be happy if anyone can give me an idea where to search.

Hello to anyone who is currently living in Kerala or planning on moving there,

My boyfriend and I are moving to India indefinitely and we are looking for a great place to settle down. I have lived in India for 6 months but never got a chance to make it to Kerala. What are everyone's thoughts? Weather, people? Jobs and volunteer opportunities? Fun activities? Safety? And suggestions or advice?

Thanks!
Jess

hi Jess,
i have not been to Kerala, so take my comments for what they are worth, however I have been diligently researching countries to live in. I have been in contact with a few english people who have moved to Kerala and found differing opinions. one person has had a very bad experience and has nothing nice to say and is sellign up and moving out while the other has loved their experience, however the govt does not want foreigners living there and continue changing visa rules to keep foreigners from living there full time. I was told there is no way of getting a residence visa and if you take a business visa it is only for 1 or 2 years and they are starting to tighten up on renewing these visas. these people, after being there for 3 years and running a guesthouse are considering other countries and may sell up and move as well. i am happy to share my research on various countries if you are interested.

you mean the indian government doesnt want people to move there? or the government in kerala? because I looked at the visa info online and it said that you could get a tourist visa for between 5 and 10 years but every six months you have to leave the country for two months unless you work out a deal when you register at the police station within 14 days of being there...

Hi, I am based in Mumbai (Bombay) and have been to Kerala several times. It is a beautiful place for retired persons but what about the cost of living. Every one wants to settle in India due to low cost of living but need to add value by doing some work but it is difficult to find in Kerala.

do you have a link to the website Jayarsi? i have been told by a westerner in Kerala that you cannot get a tourist visa longer than 6 months and you have to leave the country for at least 2 months before you can apply for a new visa. they have also changed business visas and only give them for 1 yr and you cannot renew. it seems only the americans can get a 10 yr visa

I have been living in Kochi for the past year and have just renewed our visa's with no problems. My husband is working here and my 2 kids go to school here. The expat communitiy is very limited, but there are some lovely local people. Cost of living is low. Let me know if you would likle any further info from an expats point of view.

This is a very old post. Settling and working in Kerala is a hard possibility for a non citizen. I wish to share more with you before you let me know where you are now!
