Hi,

My company, a multinational, I work for in Switzerland has offered me an interesting opportunity in Bangalore for about 2 or 3 years.
My family comprises of 4 persons (2 children) and 4 DOGS!
Any experience in moving dogs to India?
How complicated is it? Where could I get more information?
I would appreciate to get some help.
Is is easy to get a reasonable house with real garden around it in Bangalore area?

If you want to have the dogs return to Switzerland you should check the Quarantine laws in your country.

We had a dog we wanted to bring from Australia, but after checking the quarantine laws we learned that we would never be able to take the dog back to Australia. Some countries require a lenghty time in quarantine on return to your home country, other countried like Australia will not accept animals from countried like India except in exceptional circumstances.

It woud be devastating to find out that you could not take your dogs home with you.

We moved from the US to India (Pune) in 2003 with our pure bred (Schutzhund) German Sheperd. While there are many many dog lovers in all parts of India, typically, the living conditions are not suitable for large dogs, unless you live in the outskirts of cities, in a house with large front and back yards (i.e., a farm house etc).

Veternary care, while adequate does not even come close to what you would experience in Switzerland. It is extremly easy for dogs to catch infections etc (especially for those who grow up in the relatively clean conditions of western europe and the US).

Our dog fell ill with severe dysentry and we had a very tough time locating a vet who knew exactly what to do. Ultimately we were too late and we lost her last Nov.

You should also consider whether your country will take the dogs back once your tour of duty finishes.

All in all, my opinion, it is probably NOT a good idea to bring your dogs (I am guessing these are large breed).

regards

Kris

Yes, you are right. I have checked it in Switzerland. It should be no problem to bring my dogs back to Switzerland from India as long as we keep our dogs vaccinated against rabies, regularly, during our stay in India.

Any other throughts/advice?

Hello there,

Me, my wife and two kids are moving to India, ( Hyderabad) with two of our cats and a guinea pig. If you are willing to share any information ( pets, containers..) you have gathered, that will be highly appreciated. Eventhough I was born in India I am pretty bad at all these stuff and seems to be reaching nowhere!

Warmest regards

Hi!

Yes, as with all things...BOIL your water...for bothYOU and the DOG!!!

This is important. Dysentary is no FUN!!!!

And above all don't let the dog lap water that is running on the street during monsoon!!! Yuck!!!

Take care and good luck

Hi -

I didn't move a dog TO India, but apparently that isn't the problem - Its taking them back when you are ready to leave.. We got an Irish Setter while in India, and wanted to take her back to the US, but she will have to be in quarantine as long as six months. We won't be putting her through that, so she will be staying with friends in India when we get ready to leave. On a more positive note, though, there is great vet care, and there is a great pet store off Brigade Road that carried Eukanuba dog food if you need that, otherwise, its much cheaper to cook for the dog, which is what our vet recommended... So we cook a ground beef and rice for her every day, with a little ginger in it to keep the ticks off - which are a HUGE nuisance for our dog.....

Coming home to the USA isn't hard with dogs or cats. They don't quarenteen them anymore. You just have to keep the dog/cat at home and before leaving INdia get a health cert.

Take care.

My husband and I moved our two dogs (Irish Setter and an English Springer Spaniel) from the US. We had an exceptionally smooth entry into India. We had all of the required vaccination certificates but they truthfully weren't even checked when we arrived. We were able to get to the dogs quickly and get them outside of the airport to walk them. We've been able to find housing outside Delhi and in Hyderabad that works for having dogs. We've also found good veterinary care and their health has been good eating a home cooked diet. Feel free to email with any additional questions to: kelliecg@hotmail.com

I have had personal experience of moving my cat from Saudi to India and then back to the US, at each port of entry all they asked was her health certificate and current rabies vaccination record, in India, they didnt ask for anything, we waited by the plane side, gave Rs 500 tip to the guy, he bought our pet carrier and we walked right thru customs and immigration and out on the street!!. She was not quaranteened anywhere, but we were prepared for it in the US. By the way, quarantine in US is not a bad thing, one of my friend works in one of those in Baltimore, they look after the animals so well that they refuse to go with their owners when the time comes for pickup.

Did you require an international health certificate for the dogs for your move from U.S to india. Where did you receive your health certificate.. did you need it endorsed by department of agriculture. Can you please let me know your steps. I have 2 dogs and I don't want any problems when I travel to India with them. They are small dog breeds. I've found a flight that will take them. I'm so worried. I'm receiving conflicting info. Nobody seems to know very much at all. It's painful the process.

Hello,
I happen to own a bungalow with 4 bedrooms in Bangalore in with good garden space. The house is in a gated-community with security and and enough freedom children to play outside and do cycling. It so happens that I relocated to Zurich and we have kept our house locked currently.
We are looking for tenants. Where you live depends on where you work. If you are interested, do call me call me at my Zurich numbers and I can give you more information:
43-810-0843 (Home) or 44-632-8068 (Work)

I would not like to give my e-mail here, for fear of spam.
regards,
Murthy
