Anyone Living In Ahmedabad?

My husband and I are shortly moving to Ahmedabad on an assignment. I am having great difficulty getting any "real or useful" information on the city.

We are currently living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Can you advise on what life is like in Ahmedabad. What is there to do, especially for a non-working wife!! Are there any libraries? Is there a "Hash House Harriers" club? Do we need to bring a shipment of non-perishable foods and toiletries?? What are the safety issues? How easy in general is it to live there?

Would appreciate any information anyone has. We are due to move late July/early August '05.

Regards
Sharon

Sharon,
Did you "google" Ahmedabad?

I got http://www.ahmedabad.com/ There are forums at the bottom of the web page.

This is a blip on resteraunts

I visit india mostly every 2 years. I saw lot of change this december. Ahmedabad's economy and development is unbelievable. Restaurants, for punjabi food... Mirch Masala, Tomatoes, Bawarchi etc. I dont need to give you direction. As, they r famous. for traditional food, like panaki, satapadi roti, gatta nu shak etc, go to swati snacks near Law garden. For Gujarati food, lot of restaurants, Gordhan Thal, Atithi, Dadima etc. they r very nice restaurants. you go there and ask someone there... do you have any relatives there? which area are you going? take care. hope this will help.

baskin robbins is off CG road

Id just like to say a great place to visit is the original swaminarayan temple in kalupur, ahmedabad.

Its not so far from the airport and has a place to stay in the temple premisis and next to the temple (behind it), is a place called swaminarayan vishanty buvan, built by swaminarayan temple Bhuj, which is also another place to stay its clean, cheap and pure veg food is served with the price as well as nice service I would give this place 5***** also another thing about it is you can view the rooms before you move in incase you want to check for your selfs which is also good.

on and on. I hope this helps
Dzomo

Thanks Dzomo for the positive reply

I did search the "web" but the sites I looked at were not giving me enough info, but I didn't click on the "forums" - I will try this and see what comes up. I am not the most patient of people when "surfing".............

Dear Sharon,

How was your move to Ahmedabad? Is there an expatriate community there that you can link up to? It would be great if you can share your experiences about housing, schoolling, transportation and the like.

I ask because a company that I am helping are thinking of locating a group of North American in Ahmedabad for a couple of years and so all of these issues would be of great interest to them.

By way of background I am India born and raised myself, but long time US resident.

I was in Ahmedabad recently and the city has dramatically progressed in business terms.

Thanks.

S.
