Hello all,
I have been offered a position in Mumbai. I know nothing about the area and currently live in the US. The company is Reliance Industries.
Anyone have any insight in this opportunity?
I have too many questions to ask.

Hi there,
Ask all your questions, and satisfy yourself before making the big jump! :-)
Reliance is a business conglomerate, of the scale of the Korean chaebols. It is, if i recall correctly, an organization with the largest number of investors in the world. The past one to two years saw a split in the organization into two. Which of the two have you got an offer for?
Mumbai is the financial capital of the country. If the company is offering you housing and vehicle, then life in the city can be real good. Otherwise, housing is very expensive, and fuel costs can dent your savings. Commuting time between your residence and your place of work is an issue that you need to get resolved upfront. If you are married and have children, then their careers / education are other very important blips on the relocation radar that you have to address before you give your nod.
Any further questions, just shoot.
Cheers and all the best, Sanjay.

Hello JTD,
I interviewed with Reliance myself last december and thought they have a very good thing going for them there. It is obviously one of the best companies in there and their salaries are supposed to be top of the shelf. The only thing is that recently i have heard that lately they have acquired a reputation of being a little bit of 'slave drivers' But thats just a rumour...Are you in IT?
I do have a question for you though. I too have a offer from my company In north America to go to Chennai for a Joint Venture in a higher management position. I am trying to determine what is a fair salary. Not sure if they will be able to give me an expat package since I might be employed by the Indian counterpart of the JV. What would be a good package? Any ideas? How does your package look? Any help would be useful Feel free to stay in touch at raj48326@yahoo.com

Hi again,
I agree with you, jamesbond, that the work culture in most private companies in India still has the "slave driver" mindset. So, expect to put in long hours in companies such as Reliance.
The pay being quite good, though, plus the prestige associated with working with a conglomerate and highly respected company such as Reliance, keeps people motivated.
Cheers, Sanjay.

Sanjay,
Thanks for the input. I am looking at getting into their retail venture. I am wanting to find someone that has experience with the type of housing Reliance offers. I am married but my work in Mumbai will be without my family. Any insight on the life of an expat in Mumbai Sanjay? I am excited about the opportunity.
James,
I really have no idea what a good package looks like in India. I have an offer including housing and a car with a driver. As far as salary levels I am basing everything off of my current US compensation and adding a little something due to the separation from my family. I won't get rich but the opportunity looks great.
