V r planning for an assignment in Chennai. I have an offer but not sure how affordable it is since we are used to North Amrican Life style and will be keeping out home in NA. This is a higher level position. Does any one have idea if Rs.300,000/month could be affordable? We are looking for nice small indepndet single family house (3-4 bedroom) What would be the cost of this? Also, international schooling is very costly in India. Any idea on that??

Hi Camary, most expats who come to India are able tosave 50% or more of their salaries ! for your relocation questions try this site.http://www.chennaibest.com/cityresources/Travel_and_Accommodation/interview01.asp http://www.globaladjustments.com/glob7.html http://www.hindu.com/pp/2005/02/12/stories/2005021200010100.htm
Ideally its good to live in temp. lodgings and scout around till you find what you like. In Chennai you can live in a resort from 15$ a night to 152$/night and the same goes with temp service appartments. www.comforthomesinn.com. Craigslist chennai will also give you excellent rental or purchase information. For schools I would reccommend Father Adolf Washington who is also a journalist.email mobile.+9198450 12152, tel.+91 80 25264343. or try these sites. http://www.aisch.org/, http://india.english-schools.org/american-international-school-chennai.htm http://www.gsis.ac.in/,http://www.hebronooty.org/,http://www.kis.in/,

I just came back to the US from what sounds like a similar situation - kept my house in NA, while working in Pune for a year.
I think the biggest factor in whether this will be affordable to you will be the costs of international schooling and the number of children you have. Even with a generous income by Indian standards, we could not have managed if we had to pay full foreigner tuition for our children. My husband ended up getting a job with an international school that paid very little, but gave us signifcant tuition discounts, and that's what made it all work for us.
For housing, I recommend that you ask your potential employer, to assign someone to help you find and negotiate housing and get a realistic idea of the rents for housing *you* find acceptable. There are a number of factors you need to look at that you probably would not think about coming from NA, such as whether the house has a back-up generator or inverter, adequate water supply, and furnishings that you will probably think are basic, but may not fit into the standard Indian definition of "furnished," e.g. kitchen cabinets, microwave, lights, etc. We found a lovely 4 bedroom bungalow in a housing society built just the year before for 50,000INR, which was probably about twice what an Indian tenant would have paid, but was reasonable from our US-perspective. We still had to negotiate hard to get a desk in one room and have window screens added, and then bought all of our own linens, pots and pans, bookcases, etc.
Hope this is helpful.

There is an American International School here in Chennai. You can google it and get the details. A friend of mine works there, so you can email me if you want.
Please double check and triple check all promises made to you throughout your process of getting to India.
Depending where your husband will work will determine probably the best place for you to live. There are many expats in South Chennai in the Adyar area. You can get big houses in the suburbs around East Coast Road (ECR).
Go to http://www.indiamike.com where there is a forum especially for expats going to India.
You can get pretty much anything you need here in Chennai these days. The challenging part is understanding the business culture. Unlike Bangalore, Chennai is still traditional. There are some good intercultural trainers here who could help you. Beware, there are one or two extremely expensive relocation companies that seem friendly and understanding but spend too much time teaching about the social culture but not the business culture.
