Expat living in Indonesia can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. As good as it is, it is not without its difficulties and the first time expat will soon realize that some adjustments are needed. First, time has very little meaning. Meetings are set and the other side may be delayed and not even show up. They can get called away at any time and simply defer your meeting. Secondly, always seek third party verification of anything that is printed. All too often something is printed and could be read as official when it is really just "testing the water". If it is important do check with a competant friend or counsel to verify.
Lastly, be patient. Nothing works against the expat like impatience. Indonesians especially have a high degree of tolerance and will almost never explode in public. When demonstrated by the expat it is almost always non-productive. It is ok to be firm, but always be polite and respectful.
