Well, I lived in Bali for 2 years and loved it. Don't know your budget so can't really recommend anything but Lovina Beach area is quiet and not too far from Singaraja. I, personally, did not care for the area but that's just me. Most of the time I lived in Kerobokan. Look at a map of Bali - Denpasar is all the business/metro area and also where the airport is. Ubud, in the central part of the island is very artsy, hilly and beautiful. The communities from Sanur to Nusa Dua to Cangu are all nice - some expensive and some cheap - if you can live in a simple Bali style house, you should find something for $300-$500/month. You have to pay rent for 1 year - no month to month. You can get a 6 month visa - there are all kinds of "agents" look for a storefront - they're all over. You'll have to fly out after 1 month but then you just pay a monthly fee and you can stay another 5 months. If you find an employer, find out if they'll get you a Kitas, which will enable you to stay without all the hassle.

Forgot to mention that I also lived in Panama for 2 years. I guess I liked Bali more but Panama has great fishing which is hard to beat!
