I want to take my pets to Ireland

Hello,

I am Robert and my girlfriend and I are considering to move to Ireland. We live in the Netherlands and we want to take our cats also to Ireland but I have heard that Ireland has strict regulations about importing pets and that they have to go in quarantine. Can somebody tell me if there is another solution?

You might find answers to the quarantine of pets question at http://www.irlgov.ie/ Far as I know there is a 6 month period for quarantine, but the laws may have relaxed a bit...expecially the EU.

Good luck,
Angharod

Ireland has a 'house arrest' kind of quarantine now, where the dog or cat stays in a special (and involved) cage on your premises, is visited by a vet and all that. Quite involved. The better approach is the new 'pet passport.' The way it works is this: the dog (let's say) is examined by a vet in the USA and a microchip (there are different ones: have one which is ISO certified) inserted under the skin, usually at the shoulders. A blood sample is sent to a lab in the US (and there's only one approved lab). Six months after the sample comes back clear, you can travel with your dog, but he has to have a series of shots first. You have to fly into England, to one of a few special airports. The dog's microchip is scanned (and if not ISO certified, you have to bring your own scanner), and the various paperwork examined. The dog can then go into Ireland, legally. Taking the dog out again is easy, but to return, you have to have the necessary paperwork and go through Britain again. --Joe in Donegal

BEST OF LUCK! The rules are constantly changing. You want to Search the PETS passport scheme through the uK. If you bring them in with the proper paperwork & shots through London on a direct flight, they will clear you to travel to Ireland on the ferry, with NO QUARANTINE OF ANY KIND!!
Hoorah for the EU. This is all new since 04/04. Check the web for updates. The Irish Dept. of Agri doesn't always have them posted, but the UK is up on the new stuff.
