Just moved to Dublin

Hello,
I have just relocated to Dublin from San Francisco Bay area with my job. Finally settling in close to city center after all the hassle that's involved with moving across the world :). Would be great to hear from others living here: what you do on weekend, where you shop, and how are you adjusting...
Cheers!

Hi Adeline, welcome! As I said earlier in the thread, I'm Barbara and I'm here 13 years. Shopping? Well I think you'll find supermarket shopping a bit of a shock, very expensive. Head for a supermarket, not a Spar or Centra. They're like 7-11, you pay for the convenience. As for clothes, depends on your budget. Penney's is the cheapest. You can get great bargains there and their pjs and underwear hold up well for the price. Next up would be Dunnes and Marks and Spencer. Then Clerys and Debenhams and finally Brown Thomas which is the most expensive dept store here. Weekends are mainly spent in the pubs tho the rugby season is picking up now. Tough to get tickets but you can always watch in a pub where there will always be a crowd. The Gaelic football and hurling season is in the league part of the year, not as exciting or taken as seriously as the championship which starts in May/June but much easier to get tickets to than the rugger. People also go to the cinema and the theatre. Big concerts aren't as regular as you'd get in the U.S. Not all acts come here unfortunately. Adjusting takes time, but you might find yourself more Irish than the Irish in the end if you take it all on board! If you have any more qs, feel free to contact me at barbaratanzler@eircom.net

There is an American/Can expat group that meets every month or so in Dublin.
You said Ireland a little more expensive, Sir, you are being kind. 160 euro, just to have a TV. For those funds you get 2 horrible TV stations in English, and one more in Irish that most of the country cannot understand.

We use Ireland as a base of operations for travel to other places. With the discount airlines we do a lot of extended weekends. Irish Ferries has some good rates as well, and we sometimes go to France, and drive from there. With the Pound week, it is getting to be a better deal to drive up to Belfast. There is now an IKEA there. A new location is supposed to be coming to Dublin, but it will take a few years.

I like the Pubs, but at 3-5 Euro average for a pint I avoid them. I paid two bucks from the local pub back in Boston. I drink out when I am in Eastern Europe. Beer in Lithuania cost about one Euro. Eastern Europe is a lot of fun to go to, and still decently priced.

Hi have just come across your post about moving to dublin. Have been here for 10 days and would love to know where is good to shop, watch rugby and generally hang out with a coffee/glass of wine in the Dublin 4/6 area.
