110V or 220V?

Hello, everyone.
Are the transformers from 220V to 110V reliable/dependable to handle kitchen appliances, garage/shop tools...?
Any first hand experiences of using 110V power tools/shop equipment?
Good places to look for transformers?
Thank you for all info.

A slightly different voltage - coming from Oz 240v to Ireland 220V we asked the same question, apparently we can just use an adaptor though digital stuff might be slightly problematic. We asked an 'expert' and he didn't think we would have any problems so we are packing up our appliances, tv, stereo etc. I think a transformer is better for 110v to 220v.

You might find this helpful for use with dual voltage appliances:

Although it is an article geared toward travelers, there are some good tips here.

Many years ago my husband & I were stationed in Germany. Any electric item we brought with us we needed to use a transformer for. They were very expensive (and heavy) pieces of equipment which, fortunately, the US Army provided for us. What we found was that most things ran well, but things like record players did not. The speed won't be right. No one uses record players now, and many things (i.e. electric razors and laptop computers) are now manufactured for both the European and US markets and will automatically adjust, but things like CDs and DVD may not. You might do better to leave most of your electrical appliances behind and buy new or used over there.

My husband found a link to a site that explains a lot, including the difference between a converter and a transformer.

Good luck and please keep us posted.
