School Level equivalents

first off Hi and I look forward to gathering as much information as possible through these forums.

We are a family with 2 girls looking to relocate from South Africa. We all have irish passports and citizenship. The girls are currently enrolled in our local school system which is the Grade system from Grade 1 to Grade 12. Primary School (1 to 3), Junior School (4-7) and High School (8 - 12). My eldest daughter is 14 and in Grade 8 and the youngest 12 in Grade 6.

I have tried to get an idea how the school system works in Ireland and it appears that age wise they would both start at the upper and lower ends of the junior cycle in September 2016...but it is unclear how it relates to our grade system. I would be interested if anyone has some basic correlation or point me to some site I can read up on myself

Second question is about cost (isn't everything!). I know that to qualify for subsidy on third level requires we be resident for at least 3 years, but Would we qualify immediately for govt funded schooling for when we arrive? and what costs are involved outside of examination fees?
