Hopeful US - Ireland move

Post New Topic

So I've spent about 4 hrs reading this specific page as I've been researching a move from East Tennessee to County Kerry. I've read the long 250 post topic suffered by Dave and the retirement rules. I'm only 35, no where near retirement age yet. My question is how hard is it to immigrate to Ireland when you aren't at retirement age. I would love to get a work permit or even open a business in Ireland. I own 2 businesses here and I intend to operate them by satellite basically until I can sell them off. Once I do I'll either get a job or open a business of some kind. I've done a lot of researching but no matter how much you read it helps to get feedback from real people. I don't like big cities as I said i'm from East Tennessee ... I'm born and raised in the mountains so I want to live in the country. I'm from a very touristy area called Gatlinburg so I kinda wanna live in an area that is a tourist economy which is what I'm use to.

First, thanks for wading through those 250 posts on my plight last year. (Just received my renewal for the coming 12 months, BTW) Life here is GREAT! As for your situation, the best (possibly only) solution is to get a job offer from an Irish company while in the States. I believe there are certain categories of work that are excluded from work permits. Your best source of info is probably the INIS website, though if you have any Irish political connections it would be a massive help....that, or prove you're a child or grandchild of an Irish citizen. Best of luck to you. -- Dave

Hello Silverzzr, yeah that Dave 8480 thing is a whole different subject,. The easiest way to immigrate to Ireland and work there is if you qualify for dual citizenship to findd out go to the citizenship.ie site, it will explain it. If not they have other programs if you're a an entrepreneur they have a program and if you what to Starr a business in Ireland with at startup of X amount of money it is also explained ,go to this site Citizens Information.ie and INIS.gov.ie. These should be helpful. Also what you mentioned about a satellite working from home on a computer is a little schetchy and questionable when it comes to working in Ireland. Well ... Check these sites and good luck !!!!

Greetings,
I will assume that you are qualified to move to Ireland permanently/reside here - there are various treads on this subject on this site so I will concentrate on the other aspect of your enquiry - work opportunities.
As Co Kerry in SW Ireland is your chosen location - I can tell you that Tourism is very very strong in Co Kerry so if you wish to work for yourself in a Tourist related business, well Co Kerry is the right location. It's a truly beautiful county, majestic scenary - fabulous blue flag pristine beaches that go on for miles ,lakes ,mountains & lots more. There is always a strong consistent demand in Co Kerry for tourist related activities ,particularly in the peak Summer season for American/European visitors & in the offpeak - more & more Irish people are taking short breaks. So if your product/business proposal is right ,you should do well in a Tourist related activity.
If it is of interest to you,I will have a fine Country House ,in the grand classic design for sale next Spring/Summer ,that would have huge potential as a location to develop a Tourist related business in a nice coastal area of Co Kerry.
Set on a lovely mature wooded one acre site in an edge of village location - it offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside to the front & rear, there are 2 great blue flag beaches nearby(Banna Strand & Ballyheigue).Impressive looking 6 bedroom Country House property with lots of outbuilding suitable for conversion ,if required, & lots of outdoor space. The house itself would be ideal as a nice Country House Bed & Breakfast relatively near the Atlantic coastline There is plenty room to develop another detached property on the site or perhaps a series of high quality detached log cabins with parking for tourist purposes. There is additional potential to develop a mobile home parking/service area ,as these are not allowed to stay adjacent to the local beaches. Glamping(high grade camping) is another popular Tourist business that is in short supply & could easily operate from here here.
In fact you would have sufficient room to conduct all of the above listed tourist activities here ,subject to receiving the apppropriate planning permission from Kerry Co Council. My property is listed on this site or alternatively you can view photos & a general discription on the following site - Preloved UK/Ireland section(Google for access to the site).
I wish you well in your plans to relocate to Ireland & your plans to set up Business here.
Best Regards,
Donie Horan

The house sounds amazing but honestly I think I'm going to just rent for a while first. We want to be able to travel around the country for a while before we pick a 100% permanent location. I know we want to be on the west side but that's about all I know so far. I'm planning a recon visit very soon maybe some of you folks can show us around. I hear it's all about who you know in Ireland lol. Thanks for the replies I appreciate the info. By the way my wife is a nurse ... Anyone know if she needs and special certificates in Ireland to get a job there? I understand her job is a critical skill job but she's gotta register with the NMBI but it doesn't mention needing anything special.

Thats fine - I think that your strategy is 100% correct & I would always recommend people to spend time renting/travelling around before making any lasting commitments. Also bear in mind that if you are travelling around during the Summer months, think about what it would be like living in this same location in Winter time. Some properties can be very very remote which can make everyday practical living a little difficult so keep this in mind. Nurses are in great demand in Ireland but check online with the Irish Nurses Organisation to establish if your wife's qualifications transfer automatically. If they don't for whatever reason, the private care profession in Ireland is another option for employment over the short/longer term, again something that can be researched before arrival in Ireland.Wish you & your family the very best & hope that you guys will be very happy in Ireland should you decide to make the move..

Dave, congrats on the renewal. There is hope for us after all!

Silverzzr, another option for you is an immigration investment either through what is known as the IIP programme or the STEP programme, each described on the following webpage:

http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/types_of_employment/self_employment/coming_to_set_up_a_business_in_ireland.html#lac4a4

I have been spending a lot of time looking at these options as the retirement option may not work for me due to the recent changes in requirements. If you have further interest, please send me a private message. Good luck.

Hi Dave, I've just been reading your posts, what an awful experience! I'm an Irish citizen living in the US a legal permanent resident with my American husband who has dual citizenship, Ireland and US. We hope to go back to Ireland next year and are looking at property there, in Co Louth. Are things easier for actual Irish residents? Reading your posts have made me nervous! I'm from Co Down in N. Ireland so also have U.K. Citizenship.

Hello My husband and I have dual Australian/UK citizenship and spent 16 months in Ireland before returning Downunder (June 2016). We had no problems at all. Our problems related to the dysfunctional Irish Real Estate system (compared to Australia's) and weather; otherwise we had a wonderful time and were sorry to leave. Good Luck!
