The estate agent for the home we are interested in said that we could purchase it and live in it for 3 months as a holiday cottage. Not gonna happen. We have given up on this dream and will pursue Scotland instead. Thank you all for your advice and best wishes!

Poppycock. Two thoughts -- IMHO, a lot of estate agents have no qualifications to work in their field; earn very little for the privilege, and often work as an EA as a side job. Second, this being Ireland, I learned quickly that if you don't like what you hear from one official, go find another one who will agree with you. Oh, and a third, oft repeated when it comes to dealing with, say, a planning department... it's better to seek absolution for your sins after the fact, than to seek approval in advance! If you think you still might be interested in Ireland, contact the Irish Estate Agent's association or some other legal body that can quote chapter and verse... don't rely on a single person's opinion EVER (including mine) when it comes to life-changing stuff like moving to a new country!

I just commented on your other thread mcdon380.

Regarding Scotland, you are not likely to find it any easier to get residency there than in Ireland.

Before spending time on can you or can't you buy a house, you need to have an answer to can you or can't you get residency.

For the UK, the category for the visa would be 'Independent Means'. You can read here:
http://www.visaforuk.co.uk/retired_person_of_independent_means.html

The issue besides money is the 'close connection to the UK'. While they can interpret it loosely, they can also use it to pick and choose.

The advantage over Ireland if you can get into the UK is that it pretty much guarantees you permanent residency. It's a 4 year Visa and leads to 'Indefinite Leave to Remain' which is permanent residency.
