I have been reading all the posts and I am still slightly confused. I have three grandparents (two on dad's side/one on mom's) that came from Limerick. According to the Irish consulate that qualifies me to hold dual citizenship and I have started the process of getting Irish citizenship and passport. `The end goal is to move to Ireland in late 2017/early 2018 and look for a part-time job to supplement my retirement income. But is this realistic? Can I get a part time job outside a large city? Or, even in a large city? I have a small farm in Virginia that I will rent out and am hoping to find a rural house with a little land for my dogs. I have been on my own for years, love to read, and walk and am entirely comfortable on my own so don't need close neighbors.
Any input would be welcome!

We spent 16 months in Ireland 2015/2016 and I think The Sheepshead Peninsula (West Cork) sounds your kind of place - Kilcrohane especially! Ahakista too. Bantry is the nearest village/small town not sure about part time jobs though. The outskirts of the Skibbereen area too might suit. Skibbereen is a 45-minute drive from Kilcrohane. Of course the sting in the tail is a part time job. As far as living is concerned contact Elaine Spillane of Peninsula Propeties at Kilcrohane. Elaine is really good to deal with and knows the area intimately. Good Luck.

I would suggest that if you want relevant advice you provide more background info.
For example, what will your income be? If it's say $50k per year, people might suggest you don't need a part time job. If it will be $12k per year people might suggest you are going to need a full time job. LOL
If a part time job makes sense, what kind of job are you qualified to do or thinking about? Will you need a job to live on or will it be just to supplement an income that is sufficient to live on without working? If you will need to work, what will happen when you are no longer able to work?
These are all interrelated obviously and so making your situation clear up front will help you get relevant advice.

Happy to help in any small way. Interestingly enough, Peninsula Properties has a property listed for sale (for a long time now) at Dooneen West (outskirts of Kilcrohane) where Americans Donald Grant and his wife wrote 'White Goats and Black Bees' about their move from the US to Kilcrohane in the 1970s. A very popular book which, unfortunately, I could not find as it apparently is out of print. You may have more luck in the US. The property is set on 7 acres with spectacular scenery. This of course may not suit your time frame or in fact if you want to purchase but the vendor may consider a rental. Probably useless information but you might be able to find a copy of 'White Goats and Black Bees' which you might find interesting reading. Our time in Ireland did not work out for us but at least we can say we gave it a try. I have sent an Email to Elaine flagging she may receive an enquiry from Virginia. Elaine lived in the US for a number of years. Again Good Luck and wish you every success in finding your Irish idyll in 2017. You might even manage to find a copy of the book.

FlowerFairy, I take it you are not used to searching for used books online. My favourite site for finding books is abebooks.com.
If you had checked their UK site you would have found this. https://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?ds=20&sts=t&tn=White+goats+and+black+bees
It is very rare to not be able to find a book on the abebooks site.

Depending on what you are looking to do and how much money you want to make, you should not have any trouble picking up part-time work in a lot of places. I lived in Kenmare for almost 3 years and there was always a pub or cafe needing help. Good luck - and enjoy!
