Housing Prices Are Up.... Supposedly

.... but there still seems to be a lot of fine deals beyond the cities. Out in the wild, wild West of Ireland, beyond the Pale, I haven't noticed any huge increase in prices nor drop in properties for sale. I'm retired and not looking for investments, but.... damn, I see opportunities. In my town of Ballinrobe, Mayo, there's a three story commercial building in a prime location for €50K. I could spend half of that building a garage for the house.... oh, well...

Hello Dave. I appreciated your post on RE prices. I'm heading over in summer 2018. My mums family is mostly from Connemara, and I've been looking at RE websites for over a year now. Initially, I wanted to land in Galway, in the countryside but not too far from Galway City. I've since started to look at Clare and Mayo as well, and I think your corner of Mayo might work for me. How do you like living in Ballinrobe? Also, your impressions of Claremorris would be much appreciated. Mayo is looking promising, as I am finding more housing choices at the lower end of the price range. I am not seeing that many affordable choices in Galway. Any feedback most appreciated.

Ed in Salem, Oregon.

Ballinrobe is a bit weathered; some say it's been going down hill since the locals ran the Brits out about 90 years ago... but I like it. A lot. Claremorris is even better. Far more choices in shopping; a larger Tesco; an Aldi, and both towns are within a half-hours drive of Castlebar, that is the true shopping centre of the area if you're not going to Galway. Castlebar also has the regional hospital going for it. Be sure to check out Cong, Clonbur, and other small communities near the lakes, which are beautiful. (I'm 400 yards from Lough Mask.) If you can afford it, the absolute finest place to live in all the west is just north of us in Westport. Ask anyone who's been there and they'll tell you the same.

Thanks much for your reply, Dave. Yeah, I did notice a wider choice of places to eat and shop in Claremorris, as well as modest homes at the lower end of the price range. I've been to Cong. Was there last august, and when I was in Headford (east of Lough Corrib) I stumbled upon Joyces market. Wow, I could get used to doing my food shopping there. Having a good hospital within reach in case of emergency is pretty important, and I've been thinking of the Univ Hospital in Galway City as my hospital of choice. In all my years visiting the west, I have spent precious little time in Mayo. My loss. Looking forward to the big move. My biggest challenge is bringing my dogs, since besides the ridiculous expense of transporting them, it limits my housing options initially, since I will have to rent temporarily. Thanks again for your feedback, Dave. Much appreciated. Best wishes for a happy new year.
