I'm new to this forum, so here goes. I have read the information on the INIS website regarding the requirements for obtaining a Stamp 0 and permission to remain, and I came up with two questions, for now: it appears that a police background check is required. What have others done in this regard? Do I need to have the FBI investigate me before I emigrate from the US?
What about verifying my income with an Irish accountant: are there specialists who do this kind of work, and where would I look to find them?
I am hoping to live in Ireland for only a year, so I'm not worried about the long-term issues surrounding retiring to Ireland permanently. Any advice or recounting of your experience would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all in advance.

I lived in Wexford County for one year. I leased a small new house in a built-for-purpose retirement village. I have Irish citizenship as my Mother was born there. She immigrated with her family in 1929 and died in 2010 at the age of 97 in Vermont. The one advice I will give you is concerning being able to wait for just about everything. The bureaucracy is very slow and uncaring. It took me 23 days just to open a checking account. I suggest you contact a insurance agent for car insurance well before you leave the US and have the agent set you up for a policy even before you buy a car. He can do that and as soon as you buy the car, you would send him the make, model, vin number and license plate number via e-mail or text and you are covered. You are allowed to drive on US license for one year. After that you are supposed to get Irish "Junior" license. They allow reciprocal licenses from other EU countries but not US. (We are dangerous drivers I guess) Maybe you could try setting up a bank account before you go also. Although they made me prove I had a residence which had to be a letter in the POST to your Irish home address from either the Government or a business regulated by the government. Then after I got that letter from my Insurance agent, I went to the Bank and tried to finish the process but was told the application had to be sent by the POST (Snail mail) to Dubin for approval. No hurry by fax hence 23 days. It took me 3 months to get a phone and internet even though my new rental house was prewired into the central exchange. I bought a used car which surprisingly was automatic. I sold it 4 months later for more than I paid for it in 4 hours on the internet (Donedeal.ie) Second car was standard shift and when we left I sold it on that Donedeal.ie website in 3 hours. I am talking about the money was in my hand and the new owner drove away in 3 hours. Amazing ! Had to use a taxi for the last week we were there. The point here is if you will need any of these things on arrival and cannot wait, you best should try to get them started before you plan on arrival. I suggest you contact the Irish consulate well in advance to see if you can get a one year visa. I don't know what is required for non passport holders. As I had Irish passport neither my wife (Only US Citizen) or I needed any Visa. I made appointment with Irish Police Inspector in Enniscorthy prior to my wife coming over. She was given a 2 week stamp at the airport and the very next day we went to see the Inspector and she was given a one year residency card on the spot, no charge. I had to prove she was my wife (Marriage certificate) and that we had a resident address. I don't know what you will have to do if neither of you are not EU citizens. But you need to do several things before you go, or wait a long time. They don't seem to care. Another thing you will need if you want to watch TV is a TV license. If you have any questions, contact me on my profile address.

Sorry, I didn't know they don't give my e-mail address when one looks up my profile. Send me "private mail" which will get to me if you have any questions.

Go onto the FBI website - they don't investigate you; you simply request a report and pay and they'll send it to you. As far as Irish accountants - you can take your docs to any accountant in Ireland and get a letter stating everything is legit. Unless something has changed, you can't apply for permission to stay until you're in Ireland, anyway. Most towns will have at least one accountant.

Thank you for the responses. I have taken steps to obtain the police clearance, so I will at least be ready for that step in the application for permission to remain process.
