2nd mobile phone

Since I am on a mobile phone contract that I cannot break for 6 more months, I purchased an unlocked phone and a prepaid Vodafone sim card. Now when I travel to Ireland/UK/Europe, I rely mostly on the Vodafone service and only use my AT&T contract phone when I am in a free wifi location.

When my contract with AT&T expires, I was thinking of canceling my plan and getting a 2nd prepaid plan to use for the 3-6 months each year that I am back in the States. AT&T in the U.S. offers an interesting $2 per day unlimited talk/text plus 1 cent per 5kb of data plan that does not charge for any days that you are not using your phone - e.g. not in the U.S.

This could save me a lot of money. Does anyone have any experience and/or recommendations in keeping both a U.S. and Irish mobile plan?

I use Verizon when I'm in Ireland. It's a small fee extra per month, but would eliminate having to change phone numbers so much. I believe it's called the international plan. Good luck.

Kevin, check out Ting.com for your US phone service. I switched to them for the months I am in US and am pleased with the service.

Thanks for responding Daisydoo. Are you referring to Verizon's International Travel Plan? That plan appears to cost $10 per day.

Or perhaps Verizon's International Pay As You Go plan for Ireland?:
$1.79/minute
$0.50/message sent
$0.05/message received
$0.25/MMS message sent
$0.25/MMS message received
$0.002 per KB or $2.05 per MB

Thanks I will check out Ting.

What carriers do people like in Ireland? Vodofone seems pretty good (good also when in London/Paris) but reception at my home in Kinsale is pretty poor although it's a concrete construction so maybe all carriers would have the same problem.
