I am applying to be registered on foreign births based on my grandfather being Irish. I have all the docs required, even the original birth certificate, but not his death certificate. He was born in 1882 but I cannot even locate the year of death and have no relatives that can help. Is there any way round this?

Did they really ask for Death certificate ? My Son got his Birth Registered without any death certificates. Next he will get passport. His Grandfather has been dead since 1990 and we do have death certificate, but it was not asked for. What consulate are you dealing with ?

I don't remember needing any death certificates except in order to get my mother's birth certicficate from the City of New York. Have they changed the application form? I find it hard to believe they need confirmation of the death of someone born in the 1800's. Have you tried looking on Familysearch.org to find a record of where and when your grandparent died, and then follow that to the appropriate gov't agency?

Hello Joshuak, how did your son get registered , was it thru you ? You need the death certificate. to complete the lineage. I went thru my GP.'s they were from Ire and got married in the U.S. and had a child ,my father . When I went Thru FBR my GP's were deceased and I needed their death certificates to continue proof of lineage. If they were not deceased I would only had to show proof they were alive, drivers license or passport copies. In the directions on registering for dual citizenship thru FBR it stipulates a death certificate.or proof of life.

DugMax, according to the FBR you need to produce a death certificate. If the person who you are claiming citizenship from is deceased, I don't know of a way around it, maybe someone else can guide you in the right direction to get an answer to the death certificate. Good Luck!

Son has had Birth Registration for many years, but did not get passport yet as his job requires US top secret clearance and one cannot have any other citizenship with that. He will retire shortly and then will get passport. They might have changed the requirement since he registered. I do have Death Certificates of parents which of course is his Grand Parents. We were lucky as my Mother, 6 siblings, and Parents immigrated to US in 1927 - 1929 so they had all the documents with them and my Mother made sure her children got passports about 25 years ago. I am on my 3rd Irish passport. She lived to 97 and died in 2010. Father died in 1990.

Hello DugMax ,yes that is correct if G.P. We're alive all you would need is a copy of his passport but being deceased is another story ,you should contact someone in the embassy to find clarification or help on the problem. Good Luck!

Hello Joshuak, I ask because if he went thru you to get citizenship he would only have to show lineage from you to him ( marriage certificate. birth certificate, and proof of life. One other think Joshuak if a person is registered on FBR he or she is automatically a Irish Citizen. My son also works for the Feds with secret clearances and when he started they already knew I was a dual, and they went into great detail in questioning him about me, just a point of interest , have a nice day !

It is listed in the required documentation that was sent to me. I replied explaining the situation but the reply I got was that the application will be rejected unless all requirements are met. That was to the Cape Town consulate.

Hello DugMax , it really doesn't matter what embassy you're.going through they are all Irish and going by the requirements given through thr FBR of Ireland. You have got to try to speak to a live person , try one of the gov.ie sites that give a Dublin phone number or email .
