Hi! I'm Marv. Anyway, me and my brother are moving to Ireland pretty soon actually, and we were planning on buying a field and a mobile home to live there. I found many mobile home dealers online, with reasonable prices, however I'm not sure if it's legal to just plonk down a mobile home on a field which I will own. Any information and/or website to some kind of authority which I can ask about this situation. Thank you :)

Excellent question! I certainly wouldn't trust the opinion of the mobile home vendor -- check with the planning department of the county you intend to live, and if possible give them the exact location of the property you intend to buy. Best of luck!

Yes, Marv. Excellent questions. Please share whatever you find out about such laws. I can tell you from my research that land use regulations in Ireland are tricky with many restrictions or outright prohibitions on building houses in certain locations. But if a mobile home was not considered a permanent structure some interesting possibilities could arise. Thanks for the tip!

.... and to try to answer your question, I recommend starting with the mobile home vendor to get a better lay of the land as it were. Than when you inquire with an estate agent about land for sale, find out what they think. Planning departments in my experience will take an extremely conservative (anti-development) approach especially if the regulations are vague. I would only speak to Planning in general terms and not reveal any specific sites. But that may be just me as I can be a wee bit paranoid.

Hello Marv1996 , you are correct ,you can't just put a mobile home on a piece of land. They have zoning laws and health code laws that must be followed . You can put a mobile home on a property that already has a home on the property. Also they have strict codes on the construction and placement of Tiny Homes , just mentioning in case you were think along those lines. The mobile home parks seen through out Ireland are vacation homes and most are seasonal .you will have to look up the code and variances in the county and area you will buy the land. Good Luck !!!

I have to correct my last post. You are no longer able to put a mobile home on a property where a house is already there. You must get permission from the planning board. Seems because it is mobile before you could keep it on a homes property because it was moveable . That was being taken advantage of and the planning board had to give permission , which is not the easiest approval to get. It is compared to a farmer keeping a couple of cars on his land that he grows crops, that is ok with the planning board, then a year down the road the farmer has two hundred cars on his land that is for crops. The farm looks like a junk yard ,but the farmer claims the cars are mobile so they are ok there. The planing board now has to step in because the farm isn't zoned as a junkyard , that is why you can no longer put mobile homes on properties with a house already on it. That is why they have recreation , vacation and campsite areas for these type of vehicles.

We lived in Co Kerry... the only mobile homes we saw were in holiday lots... We rented a house from a family who redid an old stone house in the county... it took them 7 years to get it done.. Also are you Irish citizens? or EU members... if not you will need to check residency requirements...best of luck!

It occurs to me that I see a lot of RV's in ireland. In Kinsale, they park along the High Road along the water near the town center. It looks like the parking scheme was designed for them. They seem to stay quite while and chock up their tires so they are level.
I wonder where they go afterwards and whether they can bring their RV's aboard the ferries to the UK or France? Maybe I will run into some of these travelers some day in a local bar.

Hello KevinfromKinsalevianyc, Those mobile homes you see are going to Garrettstown House , which is a holiday park for for caravans, mobile homes and tent camping. I guess it is a cheap getaway for vacation. It cost €12 - 17 a night and if you really want to splurge or feel dirty and want a shower you can get one for €1 for 6 minutes ,that's a bargain especially if you're getting hot water. Those charges are for the high season which is May thru September.
