Searching the Foreign Births Register

Hi All,
My husband's great grandparents were born in Ireland and emigrated to the US. His grandfather was born in Massachusetts. We understand that he is not automatically entitled to citizenship, BUT, if his father registered in the foreign births register prior to 1986, he would be eligible to register as well.

The problem is that his father died in 1999, and we have no documents other than his father's death certificate. Registering is something that would be within his father's nature to do, so we think it is likely that he might have, but have no way to prove it, and anyone else who might know is dead.

Is there a way to search the FBR and find out definitively whether or not my father-in-law registered, and get documentation of that fact?

Thanks in advance!

Amanda

Hello amanda
Kindly note that you would be in need of the following documents in regards to make an application for FBR to your husband.

Your husbands birth certificate
Your husbands marriage certificates
Your husbands fathers birth certificate
Your hudbands fathers marriage certificate and death certificate and also his FBR certificate ( you have to contact with Irish consulate or embassy in your country where could he had applied for FBR certificate)
Yours husbands grandparents birth marriages and death certificate and your husbands great grandparents original birth certificate marriage certificate and death certificate if possible for making proper link between perantage.

HI! Thanks for the information. As a first step, I have contacted the Irish consulate in San Francisco to see if they can help us find out if his father registered. I don't know why I didn't think of that before!

Thanks again for your help!

As far as I know, your Husband MUST have either a Parent or Grandparent that was BORN in Ireland to get citizenship. Just because his Grandfather was registered, I do not believe qualifies. The rules say Parent or Grandparent BORN in Ireland. It does not extend to Great Grandparents.
