If you are looking by yourself than of course the best 2 web sites are Yad2 & Homeless. The main problem with this 2 websites are that they are published only in Hebrew and the competition over the market is hard the demanding is huge and the supply of assets is short.
The reason to go to an agency is not only for saving time, a good agency will have a supply of assets that would not appear anywhere else I think it is much better (it cost money but it worth it ) just for the fact that there are so many apartments published and more than half of them are uninhabitable so don’t waste your time and try to find a reliable agent.
A friend recommended me of TLV2GO few years ago when I needed a place to stay in Tel Aviv just for a couple of days they have a nice variety of furnished apartments in Tel Aviv for short term rental that were an ideal solution for me while I was looking for an apartment for long term and they actually helped me with that also, one of the partners on the company is a real estate broker and they are giving a full real estate service for foreigners.

they are good not to expansive and reliable.

Good luck with your move. I am currently living in Ramat Aviv, and the costs here are pretty high (equivalent to nicer areas around Boston, where I lived before). ----

I agree with the above commenters who said that your best bet is to have a local, Hebrew-speaking person help you with your search. Certainly there will be brokers and agents who can facilitate rentals, but the more you are able to do through friends, the more money you will save. ----

Here are a couple of things I've learned about real estate here that have not been mentioned yet in this thread: ----

1. Rent is not paid monthly, but instead is paid every THREE months. ----

2. Electricity is EXPENSIVE. Your electrical bill may be double or triple what it is in America, even if you are not running the air conditioner all the time. ----

3. In addition to your rent, you will be paying "maintenance" (Hebrew: "Va'ad Byet"), every 4 months, and "municipal tax" -- "Arnona," every 2 months. These are calculated as a percentage of your rent, and add about 5% to the total cost. ----
