We're planning our aliyah with our GSD and need to know if there's heartworm (or mosquitoes) in Israel before we stock up on the meds! Thanks.

Hi, I am a veterinary surgeon, MSc., MSc, MRCVS. To my knowledge, heart worm is not very common in Israel, but both the mosquito and the parasite can be found here. You would anyway be wise to bring advocate worming treatment, since this drug also is effective against a much more common parasite, the spirocerca lupi, or in common parlance over here, the park worm. You can get advocate here in Israel, but it is quite expensive compared to UK standards, which I know is higher than the US cost for same product. You could also consider bringing milbemax tablets, since that would boost your level of protection and also prevent any tape worm infestation. Before you arrive, be sure that your pet is up to date on rabies vaccination, I believe when arriving from the US, you need to present a virus titer blood test, which shows that your pet has responded adequately to the vaccine. You can find helpful information on this on the Israeli veterinary services web page, http://www.vetserv.moag.gov.il where, if you rummage around long enough, you will eventually find the correct information, or you can ask your aliyah agency to provide the information for you. You should also ask about details on how to transport your dog, since if it arrives separately from you (on another flight, as cargo) you actually have to go to the Israeli customs authorities at the Ben Gurion airport, and do all of the customs procedures yourself, which I can assure you, from personal experience, is time consuming, confusing and very very vexing. other than that, dogs enjoy a very good life here and Israelis are as a rule very caring about, and proud of their canine companions. I am sure your dogs aliyah experience will be less befuddling (and therefore also less enriching) than your own!

Kind regards
