" I may be moving to Milan to work at a small Internet design firm. I have so many questions! How do you find a place to live? What is the cost of living? What are good areas to live? What do people wear to work? How formal, etc.? What cultural things should I be aware of? Is it easy to be a vegetarian? "

" To help you I would like to know where you are living at the moment. For example, if you are from the UK, the cost of living in Milan is up to two thirds cheaper than the UK. To find a flat you can use newspapers, or estate agents. A good area to live is Pagano. Pagano is near to the center, but it is far enough away to be quiet and has some nice parks and shops. Work clothes tend to be formal and dark, but not power-dressing. Good shoes, bag and generally looking well groomed is the code. Being a vegetarian is fine here, there is a vast selection of food available in all restaurants. If you have any other questions please ask me. From Rachel "

" I am fairly new here myself, and like it very much, but change is always difficult! First, make sure your documents are in order, because the bureaucracy here is fierce (albeit not illogical). I would say...it will cost more than you think. Rent will be between £1-2 million depending on the size apt you want. To sign the rental contract you pay 3 months rent plus 3 more months as a deposit. Rent is typically paid quarterly, rather than monthly. Many apartments come furnished or semi-furnished (both cost more), but empty apartments often have no kitchens, and a kitchen costs more than you think (£4-10 million). Other good areas (beyond Pagano) are Cadorna, Washington, Citta Studi. Good sources for apts are also posted signs in the neighborhoods. People here generally care about what they wear; probably you would get a good sense of the style once you get here. You probably have what you need in your wardrobe and just have to put it together differently! Fore a very basic intro to the culture, I recommend a book called ""Culture Shock!"" Italy. Generally people speak English, but not very well, even in business it doesn''t compare to other European countries. "
