i am an actor living in rome with dual canadian and italian.

i was born here and grew up in north america.

i am having alittle trouble making friends with the italians as they are really family oriented, espcially in the south.

so being an american in rome would like to meet like minded people just to hang .

talk cinema or do play readings..

to see if there is acommunity in rome .ciao carmine.

My pleasure to help in any way.

I have been in hot pursuit of all things Italian from an expat perspective because I plan to make my home permanently in Italy in 2005. I am getting very close to obtaining my Italian citizenship (dual with USA). I have made six very enjoyable trips to Italy over the past nine years and I can't get enough of the experience. I plan to buy property in either Umbria or Puglia, possibly run a Bed and Breakfast or agriturismo, teach English (I am now enrolled in a TEFL certificate program) and try my hand a writing. I too think the experience will be liberating. It sounds like you too had a strong calling to a new life in Italy.

Hope things fit together nicely on the social front too.

Ciao,
Tom

you got it .

exactly why i came over and i must say my soul has been really liberated.

i found though intense feelins of homesickness which i think is to do with watching too much tv,

i read more now and also write poetry.

i also plan on buying aplace outside of rome.

ciao carmine.

Ciao!

I saw your postings and I too share the same desires you have. My friend and I will be moving to Roma in April. We would be glad to hang out with you. Any advice on finding a flat? We seem to be having difficulty finding something affordable. Grazie.

Hi Matt, I have been living in rome for 2 years, having come also from England. When are you arriving?

There is a good magazine called Wanted in Rome, go to www.wantedinrome.com
It has a section on houses/rooms for rent - you may be able to find something there. Its on sale at news agents here so you can buy it too when you are here.

Carmine,

You are now 1 year in Rome. How do you feel? Are you acting? Have you found friends? I am a soon-to-be ex-pat from everywhere but Italia, il mio cuore. I am looking for friends while I'm planning the move. Che ne pensi?

I am planning to move to Italy for at least a year. The bad news is that I have NO idea where to start. And, for that matter, I couldn't tell you where I want to live, nor could I list the myriad of variables I need to consider. The good news is that I have a year to figure everything out, as I will not be able to leave the States until next August.

Any help and/or insights that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Brandon

Hi Brandon,
You do have a lot of ground to cover -- but if you're not in a rush to do it you're already ahead of the game...A lot of people (me included!) came over with no idea of what it would take to stay...Anyway a few suggestions -- if you've got an EU passport things will be easier, if not you'll have to be a bit more creative to get a work permit (eg perhaps coming over as a student, working part time & then converting your permit) depending on what you want to do, your skills & experience etc...
To research immigration laws, a good starting point is the vademecum section of 'www.stranieriinitalia.it' and I'd strongly suggest subscribing to the www.informer.it online magazine -- it's run by a british guy who has been sorting out foreigners in italy for about 15 years...it's better than a book because it's constantly updated & you can ask the editor for help to sort your specific situation directly...
As for choosing a city etc, you might want to sign up for the expat group on MSN ==> A lively bunch of foreigners living in different parts of the country, there's a special section called wannabe for people who're considering moving over...Feel free to write to me via zoomata.com if there's anything specific I can help you with...I'm an American journalist, in italy for over 10 years, have lived in Florence & Milan...
Good luck,
Nicole

Requesting Help

I unfortunately live in the states (Atlanta). I took a short trip to Italy in the spring, saw Venice, Florence, Rome...lots of sight-seeing. I fell in love with the place....not hard to do. Now I need to determine how to get back, get a job, get residency, and say goodbye to the US for good. Is there a company or relocation service that I can just "sign-up" with and not have to worry about all the paperwork? If not, can someone help me in my venture and direct me to the www. site that would offer me the most help?

Thanks to all,

Justin

hi there nicole from zoomata- i am not the person you were writing to but your info was extremely helpful to me. i am moving to milan (from nyc) sometime after xmas 2003. i am a dual citizen, american and italian. i know that will make some people jealous but honestly i am not yet clear on what it means exactly - i mean do i have all the rights and privileges of any other italian? one particular issue i am concerned with is health insurance. i do not as yet have a job lined up in milan. i am an experienced teacher (not in english, but theatre, speech and acting). i would really like to teach acting and improvisation but i imagine i will be able to teach engish. i am very well educated so i would lie to see what is open to me. in fact, i am sending my resume to zoomata!! i got my italian citizenship a year before 9-11 but have not been in a position to go til now. if you would like to write to me privately, my email is teriannef@yahoo.com
thank you for your kindness
