Coolharbour -- are you still in Campione? We are moving there in September from USA. Would love to hear from you.

Sparrow19,

My husband and I are considering moving to Campione from Canada for retirement. Because it is so small it is difficult to find anyone to ask about living in the area. When you are settled I wonder if you would mind sharing your insights?

Grazie!

Lorri

Hello Lorri,

Sorry for the very late reply. We were in the process of shipping our goods and moving and I just noticed your query. Re Campione: it is a very, very tiny village. The income from the casino was supporting the municipality, but the casino closed in August 2018 (we didn't know this until after our arrival in October). The village is broke and what little businesses that were opened are now closed. The place is depressed and we too are depressed! Practical info: 1. You must have a car even if you want to buy a carton of milk as there are no grocery stores in Campione. 2. There is no entertainment, i..e, movie theatre. 3. There is a bus service from Campione to Lugano, the Swiss town across the lake. We normally to to Lugano once a week to shop or just to escape the silence of hearing the grass grow. 4. If you like a very, very quiet environment, then you will like Campione. 5. Even though business are shuttered and people without work, housing is still expensive. The positives are: 1, Good weather; 2. Safe; 3.. Clean, 4. beautiful scenery; 5. opportunity to travel within Europe easily. 6. There is a pharmacy. We've been here roughly a month and are still in settling-down mode. I guess after six months, I'd have a better idea if life in this village would be suitable for us. We had a snag when our goods reached Amsterdam. Since Campione is "controlled" by some Swiss laws, the Swiss insisted on a second customs inspection. In the end it was okay except for attending tension for a few weeks. So, I would suggest you do as much research as possible about this town and the area around Campione, as well as the Swiss laws and restrictions, etc. Hope some of this helps. If there are more questions, I will be glad to answer. Good luck!
