10-month stay in Italy?

I want to stay in Italy for a 10-month period from Sept. 03 through June 04. The problem is, what kind of visa can I get? If I go on a tourist basis, I can only stay 3 months with perhaps another 3-month extension. I've been looking into the 'elective residence" visa, but that seems aimed at wealthy retirees. I have enough money to do this 10-month gig without working, but I'm certainly not wealthy nor ready to retire! Do I have any options? I'll be living in a small town, so don't think I can get away with just being invisible on the bureacratic radar. Anyone here successful at getting a residence visa, or otherwsie extendign their stay past 3-6 months? THANKS!

Your best bet might be a study visa -- especially if you have some finances to back it up. There are plenty of US university programs in all parts of Italy (whatever your age) or you could study Italian, photography etc. The Italian consulate closest to you will have a list of the Italian schools they consider 'qualified,' the other kinds of schools are usually pretty knowledgable about helping you meet visa reqs. Also as a student you can work 20 hours per week, which never hurts.
Good luck,

Nicole
