Hello! im an Australian living for years in the USA - currently Charleston SC and I want to retire to Italy this year. I don't want a boring quiet town, but i also dont want Florence and the noise and tourists. Also most important, renting an apartment [for one] on a small budget! must be near transit, i looking forward to ditching the SUV Any ideas I would so appreciate! Would also love to hear from anyone who might like to form a small group of us heading in the same direction!?

For retirement -- south. It's warmer, slower, quieter, cheaper, friendlier. If you are looking for employment, want an urban experience, or like skiing, go north.

Southern Italy I think as I don't like the cold and definitely not snow! I like the idea of Tuscany... Marche perhaps?

I think central Italy is definitely the location somehow... im very open to other expats comments who have already done this move and know from experience! The move alone is daunting enough :-)

In over 20 years of travel to Italy from the Alps to the Aeolian Islands/Sicily, the place you want to call home should sing to you. If that hasn't happened yet, you need to remain flexible by renting an apartment that you can use as a base to explore. When I first visited Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi, I was suse THAT was where I wanted to live. When I fist visited Tuscany and its hilltop towns, surely THAT was it. Then it was the lakes region that became THAT place. As I jouneyed further, I realized that all of Italy attracts me in some way; but calling a place 'home' becomes a filter. That's different from being a vacationer or traveller. I wanted the place to sing to me, to welcome me. For me that is Puglia and particularly the town and environs of Matina Franca. This has been a personal journey, the conclusion from which I determined where my new home would be -- not necessarily your your choice. Your question about places in central Italy brought to mind another one of those places I thought might have been simpatico -- Viterbo. What a brooding, spectacularly medieval town this is. The architecture, the fountains! Use your home filter and your special place in Italy will sing to you too!

Whidden39 - Thank you so much for your very thoughtful message... I so understand the sentiment behind it being a world travel my whole life. Last night i read a long feed of negative comments about culture shock, depression and the Italian attitude to things in general, today I've taken 40 steps back! I truly don't know if I can do it if that's whats ahead, and I'm a real challenge lover. I think my daughter and i might come for a holiday and go from there... [signed ..."spoilt in America!"]

Check out the wonderful town of Soverato (CZ) in Calabria. It's one of the prettiest beach towns I've ever seen.

I heard that it is beautiful there! thank you for the kind encouragement. We are going to come for a holiday first now later this year, then decide if the move is for me [I'm sure a holiday is v different than living full time somewhere however].
