I have a sponser...now what?

I am here in Padova until January 7 (visitor). I am going to try for citizenship through a great grandparent upon my return. A wonderful friend and his wife agreed to sponsor me for a year while I wait on that to go through. Can I come back on a visa of sponsorship? Has anyone heard of this? They have a good, solid income. I have health insurance. I imagine I cannot work while here though. Not legally. I will not be working for them, they will not be paying me. Thoughts???Thank you in advance!

I've heard of personal sponsorship in other EU countries but not Italy.

Perhaps this link will help: http://www.lifeinitaly.com/moving/permit.asp

Maybe you can try to seek non-work residency. As you can see, the income requirements are based on your ability to live not your friends. Also, you should look into applying for citizenship from your home country (US?). I think your find the process a lot less frustrating.
